12's in a DD??
I recently purchased a 00Z A4 with 3.23's. My question is this, what mods would be necessary to reach consistent 12's, with little difference in daily driving. I am not opposed to a cam change. I have actually been considering doing a cam change without heads. I don't want a crazy setup. Definitely on a budget. Obviously, I will start with an airlid. I do have to pass an emissions check annually, where they are supposed to look for cats. Would this be possible for around $1000. I have read that many people suggest full length headers. How loud are they? Interstate driving is something I do, if you know what I mean! About the free mods, are they really worth it? I read an article in GM High Tech Perf. where they did all free mods on a TA A4 with 3.23's and only gained a 1/10th. To me this is not worth it. I guess if I run 13.00, then I might consider it!!! Thanks for your help and expertise!

I'm thinking it MAY be possible. You're probably going to have to hit the perfect combination of parts and have one hell of a tune on that budget...
all work is going to need to be done by you and maybe even learn how to tune with trial and error to save money.
But my slightly educated guess is yea, I think it can be pulled off for close to a grand.

yea the LS1 responds very well to bolt-ons. You're going to want the lid first off, and I would venture to say it can't be done without some form of exhaust work. Then a stall and maybe D.R.s could do it. Then possibly tuning if you aren't there yet.

There's so much information on this site...take some time and look around and figure out a plan, price stuff out. If I was in your shoes I would invest in a pair of good drag radials before anything else...see what it does, and go from there. You're A4, so breaking into the 12's can be had relatively easily. As for the free mods, I never bothered, I personally don't think they're even worth doing....but then again they are free, so that's up to you. Hope that helps you out!! Good luck with the 12's man!

Problem with exhaust.
Unfortunately, the previous owner was kind enough to think that the sound of the evil muffler(Flowmaster), was great and so he put one on the car. it's not a catback, just a welded in muffler with factory tips. How bad is it? Please be easy on me, as I didn't buy the muffler myself.

get yourself a lid, longtube headers, a catback and a ported throttle body. you should be able to hit 12's for sure. now get yourself an LS6 intake and a tune and you'll be consistently in the mid-high 12's on an A4 w/3.23's. these mods will give you 60+rwhp to the wheels for sure.

Your flowmaster is worthless to you...other than worth a few bucks towards a cat-back.
You will need headers of some sort and a catback for your goal.
Look at Mac mids since you need to be emissions legal and have cats. They are very affordable and sometimes you can find them used on the board here.

Consistant 12.70 Daily Driver. See my sig. The Valve covers have never been off my LS1. ET Streets at the track.
BTW, the pic is photo chopped.

i had a 98 z-28 with a 3chamber flowmaster welded in/stock pipe, off road y-pipe,L.C.A,free mods, slp air lid,k&n filter and ran 13.19@106.i would try a lid,slp mass air sensor, and a tuning with the muffler you have and get rid of the cats if you can they made the big difference. you sould hit high 12s no problem.
