Default What should the first bolt ons be?

I am almost ready to start modding my 98 Formula. I already have done the CAGS delete. What does everyone reccomend for the first few bolt ons? I was thinking under the lines of the standard whisper lid, and a Magnaflow catback. What does everyone else think? Anyone know if the pulley is worth it? With these bolt ons, can you really feel a difference? Opinions welcomed.

I actually have some UMI SFC's sitting here waiting to be welded in, as well as some Eighbach springs I got with the car to be installed.

Looking mostly for mods to help increase HP, and not cost an arm and a leg just yet (I plan on doing some headers a little more down the road).

Anyone done the pulley?

IMO, if you're going to start with "small" mods first, you should start with
intake / exhaust mods. Letting that motor breathe is critical.

Intake

  • Lid
  • ported TB (bump stop mod)
  • stock MAF
  • paper filter is fine
  • smooth bellows (SLP, fernco, etc)
Exhaust
  • Catback (I personally dislike the Magnaflow tips)
  • cutout (inexpensive yet efficient)
  • Headers (when you get a little more serious)
Just for reference, my '00 A4 Z28 went 13.0 @ 107mph with
only a lid, a Hooker catback, and free mods on a 2.0 60'.

You should be ok without a tune with basic mods. If / when you get
headers or more serious mods, you'll definitely need a tune.

You'll feel a definite increase with just a lid and cat-back. When i put just a lid on my formy it pulled a little better up top and then when i put my magnaflow cat-back on i could feel a change throughout the entire RPM range.

After typing this i now start to miss my formy.

Sweet. Thanks for the input. Has anyone tryed the SLP pulley? If so, did it make a difference? This was the one mod on my 95 Z that after I did it, I noticed no difference what so ever.

IMO, that's certainly not one of the first mods you'd want to do.
There is much more power to be had by doing intake & exhaust
mods.

dont forget about an LS6 intake (or ported FAST if you have $ to just blow), although its kind of a bitch to get off, it still is a bolt-on and would compliment a lid, tb, and exhaust system...

Might as well just go to a Fast 90. If it were me, I'd do that along with
H/C. Actually, if it were me...I'd just go turbo from the jump.

I hope you have a good set of shocks to go with the springs...

My Z is setup for drag raccing with all the suspension components. For my Formula, I plan on having a little more stiffer suspension. I know I will loose traction, but I'd rather have it corner better. The WS6, had slightly improved shocks over the stock ones I have been told. I'll probably leave them in until they require replacement.

By all means I will probably do the lid and exhaust first. I just wanted opinions for down the road if the pulley does anything or not. After all the bolt ons, I plan on doing a cam swap, and then getting a good tune. It will remain that way until the motor goes, and then I will venture down the Turbo road.

If you want the car to corner, a good set of shocks should be #1 on the list. Your car is going to ride like it has wood wagon wheels with those springs and stock shocks. Contact Sam Strano.

I wouldnt do the pulley until you do the cam swap, save some energy. I would have done timing chain with the cam/pulley/springs/pushrods too, but money was really tight at the time and i needed to prioritize.

Like I said earlier, I already have some Eighbach lowering springs to go in the car. I was told the WS6 package included stiffer factory shocks, as well as larger sway bars. This should be good enough for me, as I'd rather concentrate the mods towards making some more power.
