Default The oil question..

I know this topic has been touched on before, but I cant make up my mind on what oil to run in my 99 Z28 that I just picked up. The previous owner had been running synthetic blend with good results. Im trying to decide If I should go to mobil 1 synthetic, or what I should use. Any imput would be great.

Search, you might just be being lazy, HOWEVER to be fair there have been times when I needed info fast and did not have time to sit and read through forums so in my research for my 98 TA I have found that Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5-w30 is the best, doesnt thin out too much like Purple Royal, but to each his own. Good Luck

It's been discussed in many threads that Mobil 1 5w30 is TOO THIN for our cars. Its almost a 20wt. The viscosities of choice for Mobil 1 is 0w40 and 5w40.

This is why I made a new thread because I have read good and bad about the mobil 1. Should I go with the Mobil 1 5w-40 or just another 5w-30?

It's not that M1 is bad, just that the 30 might be a little thin. I've used the M1 Truck & SUV 5w-40 (now marketed as Turbo Diesel) and GC 0w-30 (now marketed as European Formula). Both very good oils, no noise or oil use with either one.

I like M1 0W40 or 5W40 for the LS1.

Try a seach on this topic, you will find many hours worth of reading.

Where can you buy Mobile 1 0w40 or 5w40? Also, which is better for a daily driver?

AutoZone has the M1 0W40. There is a local chain in my area called Murray's that has the M1 5W40.

These guys have pointed you in the right direction. 0w40 is what I am currently using. Once I confirm that the 5w40 is still the same formula as before, only labeled differently, I will go back to using it. Either one is a good choice outta the Mobil 1 line.

I saw plenty of both M1 Turbodiesel 5w-40 and GC 0w-30 European Formula at my local AZ Sunday morning.

Strange no one has mentioned Amsoil. I've always heard they're the best.

It's a good oil, but you usually can't just drive down to local parts store and pick it up. You have to get it thru a dealer or sign up with Amsoil as a dealer... and pay $ for shipping. Why bother when GC or the right M1 synth is just as good for our engines... maybe better.

Sure you can, but why pay synth price for "synth" that really isn't? AFAIK GC is the only true synth sold by Castrol. Might as well get the GC or one of the M1 40s, true made from scratch synthetics, not highly refined dino juice.

Simply put, if you have a stock LS1 you could run any 0w-30/5w-30/10w-30. You could use any 0w-40/5w-40/15w-40. They will all work and not kill your engine within 100k miles.

Cheap. Expensive. Yellow bottle. Green bottle. Silver bottle. Blue bottle. On sale. Not on sale. It don't matter if you change your oil at 3-4k miles.

If you beat it hard, buy one on the thicker side of 30w.

Any other discussion that doesn't include proof of effectiveness like an oil analysis result is just an opinion.
