Question about Ram Air
I am new to Trans Ams, but I was wondering I am going to by the SLP FlowPac which includes the cold air intake, filter, lid, smooth bellows, and blackwing. Will this be effective if I do not have a ram air hood. I have a 2000 Trans am. Also if I buy all of this will I even need a ram air hood?

So you think I would be fine just buying the lid? Why wouldn't the cold air intake be worth buying? Also what are some of the first bolt ons you guys would recomend that are cheap if not free hp gainers?

if you're looking for inexpensive mods...the flowpac wouldn't qualify.
the filter is not needed...regular paper is just fine
the bellows aree 99.9% visual mod
therefore the only real things of any value in the kit are the lid and the cai.
all lids are the same. look for one used.
the CAI is not bad. but for free you can do the "free ram air" mod and gain some power free. or you could go the other direction and get a better CAI like the SSRA and have a functional CAI at slower speeds and a functional RAM AIR at higher speeds.
there are not many cheap/free mods for the LS1. other then the "free ram air" (FRA), you've got the throttle body bypass, EGR tube removal (pre 01), muffler swap, cutout, and there is always weight reduction.

i think the ftra is a great intake that with a lid & p/p tb & ls6 intake and you have pretty much finished that portion of modding...and it isn't all that expensive....ftra is proved to increase power --- http://www.installuniversity.com/ins...sity/index.htm

Honestly,.. you can just remove the bottom portion of your air box with a dremmel and still get the same effect. I'd invest in a lid though. My only concern with the "CAI" on F-bods is the amount of road crap you'll collect in your air box,... such as gravel, leaves, bugs and etc. I remember a guy get'n a Snicker's wrapper in there once!
... I'm fortunate to have the WS.6 hood and I MADE it functional. I never looked back!!!

You go off roading with that thing or something? The extra amount of debris that gets into the bottom of the box is minimal for one and for two the filter is there to stop anything that does get in there.

You won't get much if any power from a R/A hood, that's mainly an appearance mod. For the price of the hood and paint, you'll get better performance gains if that money was spent elsewhere.
But the hood looks bad ***, doesn't it? That's pretty much the point of it.
