400K miles on an Ls1 possible? Also rebuild questions
I am checking out a 98 Z28 that supposedly has over 480K miles on it, is this possible? The leather seats dont have any major wear on them and the car is clean. The milage seems insanely high, any way to tell if the engine has been rebuilt or is original? It has gone through a few people and the previous history is unknown.
Also if this really is the true milage I would have to assume the cylinder bores will be worn, is it true that the 98 block cannot be bored out? Does that mean I would have to buy a new block to rebuild the engine? I have read that resleeving is more money than it is worth.

Doesn't seem likely that it would have 400K miles. That's over 3000 miles per month for the life of the car. I drive 120 miles a day, round trip, to work and that's about 2500 miles per month. I haven't met anybody that daily drives their Fbody more than that! I'm sure someone's out there, but I'm at 200K on my 98 TA currently and can't imagine someone with double that! The good news is that you should be able to get the car dirt cheap and then pick up a used low mileage LS1 to swap in.

any idea what a fair price is? He is asking $2700 for the car and it is a M6. Any chance the odometer is screwed up? I havent driven it yet, do they have a tenth digit so I could track it against mile markers to see if it works right?

well what do you plan to do with the car? are you going to swap motor/trans?
2700 is pretty cheap and well as long as the body seems in good shape and you say the interior is nice i guess it doesnt matter.
we need pics! maybe car fax with help you out?

I would probably drive the car for the summer but utimately would like to drop the LS1 T56 into my 68 firebird. So I am mainly buying the car for the engine and transmission but just cant imagine that many miles on an engine without a rebuild, especially since Z28s are not driven usually like grocery getters.

This is entirely believable. I bought my V6 Fbody in May of 98 and broke 100k miles in June of 2001. I was in high school until 2000 and only had a summer job. I racked up this many miles just cruising basically. Granted I did drive from state to state just for fun. Having this many miles is easily doable on a 10 year old vehicle with a daily commute.
The engine may be ready for a rebuild, but in my opinion if it still runs strong dont touch it. Run it as is for now then when you pull it to put into your other vehicle just do a basic rebuild with the block. The transmission will probably be ready for a rebuild also. Just do it all when it is out of the vehicle during your transplant.

checked out the car, pure garbage. Drove 90 minutes because this guy (dealer working out of his house in NJ) said the car ran and drove great..started it and the SES light was on and the engine had a misfire. Scanned it and had thousands of missfire counts on all different cylinders, dead O2 sensor readings,etc..try to put it in reverse and it was so bad you had to jam it into reverse and hold it there with heavy pressure for it to stay or else it grinded badly. I got him to admit he paid $100 for the car from a donation agency, and said he had it sold already so he wasnt coming off $2500 for the car. I feel sorry for the kid that buys this POS. This is why used car dealers are looked at so badly, I cant believe he talked the car up so much just to try and make a buck.
