Default timing with the 5177

i just ordered the 5177 kit for my 98 z28. I know it says the kit has everything needed to install and run, but i didn't see anything to adjust the timing. can i run the kit the way it is with a 125 shot, or will i have to first purchase a timing controller. if so, what is a cheap one that will work good.

You shouldnt need any timing at all.... I have the same set up and never messed with my timing, No problems yet!

It is a very good idea to install one step colder plugs though. NGK TR6's are a good choice. Gapped @ .030-.035.

Your timing should be okay with a 100-125 shot. Using Sunoco 94 fuel I can run about 28* of timming with no KR. You might have to dump that SLP MAF, mine didn't work well with the nitrous, it gave me a very erratic timming curve and I could never figure out why. You might also have to look into some kind of editing device or a MAF translator, my car went pretty lean on a dry 125 shot.

My car is having the timing adjusted to get the best out of the engine when I am not using the nitrous and when I am going to use the nitrous the timing will commputerized to drop and give me the optimum performance from it. I dont know th exact principle of how it will be done but my tuner with the LS1 edit program said my car will get the best of both worlds when I drive it. He has done it before on the other dry nitrous programmed cars.

thanks man. i'd like to see what you run in the quarter when you get you nos. do you think i can dip into the 12's on street tires and stock clutch with the 5177 kit?

would the maf translator possibly solve the problem with the slp maf. b/c i got the tsp 85mm airlid so i can't go back to the stock maf. is there a better 85mm maf than the slp? is a maf translator hard to use? would i need an air/fuel ratio gauge?

yea u can run 12's because i ran 12.87 at 900 psi, and my car was basically stock

I'm really not sure what the problem was with the SLP MAF, it was easier to get rid of it than figure it out. Basicly between 4-6,000 rpm my timing would jump all over the place from 23* to about 27* with no KR at all. I thought it was a programing problem in general and one day a ditched the MAF for the stock unit and I had back a nice smooth timing curve that peaks to where I set it. I believe that Granatelli makes a MAF tuned for dry nitrous use but I don't know much about it. With a MAF translator or any other tuning device the most desirable way to set your A/F ratio is on a wideband but I usualy use my O2's to give me a general idea of where the car is at. I have no experiance with a MAF translator but have heard that there simple to use, I use a Diablo Predator with a custom tune to make adjustments and it's a very simple tool to use which is why I like it. For now I would leave your set up the way it is and install the kit, buy some kind of diagnostic device like Auto Tap or a Predator. Start with a 75 shot and see how things go. If you do purchase a Predator they can send it to you with a custom dry nitrous tune, from my experiance with Diablo there tunes are very accurate to what I have asked for and I only have to make small adjustments.

I should be dipping into the high mid 11's because I already run 12.27 in the quartermile with the setup I have now. LS1 edit will help with the MAF you shouldn't need the translator.

Click on the link in my sig. Once at my site, click on the Timing Tuning link. I have a write-up of how to set your timing up to retard only when you spray. It isn't too difficult to do with LS1 Edit and it works great. I run 29* of timing NA and it jumps back to 23 when I spray. Let me know if you have any questions.

you can run the 5177 on your car the way it is and it'll last forever, once you put some sticky tires you'll need a clutch, and if you miss a gear, you'll need pushrods, but as far as street tires and stock engine, its the BEST way to make horsepower for as inexpensive as possible!

N2O and TC are the best bang for the buck any A4 owner can make.
