Default 5w30 or 10w30 for nitrous cars?

Hey guys,

I am switching over to ROYAL PURPLE from MOBIL 1. I am also debating switching from a 5w30 to a 10w30. Someone told me the 10w30 might work better because of nitrous. 5w30 Mobil 1 is fairly thin.

So should I use 10w30 RP
or
F all that and stick with Mobil 1 and try 5w40?

The 30 weights seem to be to thin for these cars and alot of us burn it like crazy. I was going through up to a qt. per track outing. I would reccomend going with the M1 or Amsoil 5W40. When I switched to M1 0W40 I completly stopped using oil, M1 changed their 0W40 alittle and I didn't like my wear numbers so I'm going with the Amsoil 5W40.

It doesn't matter, any differences are immeasurable.

Exactly.
Less oil in the chambers is better, but changing weights or brands is probably not going to fix that.

How can you guys say the differances are immeasurable? Do a search, there are alot of us that have gone through burning up a ton of oil to absolutly non with a simple swap from the 5W30 to 0W40 or 5W40? And as for a differances between brands and even weights under the same brand name, start doing a search for some oil analysis results, I can tell you that the differances in wear numbers are measurable and so will Blackstone, Dyson, Oil Analyzers Inc, or any other good laboratory.

BTW Crazee: If your looking at Royal Purple, look at the Racing 41, alot of LS1 guys have been real impressed with that.

Do a search?
Sorry but I don't believe everything I read on the internet.
I'm only going by my own test results. The best quality about my own results are that they are unbiased, which cannot be said for the tests done by anyone who sells oils for a living.
When someone spends $70+ to change their oil, one should expect some placebo effect in a very many cases.
I've done a lot of tests with many different oils.
Your own test results may vary. If you trust your testing techniques and test equipment, then go with your way. I can respect that.

I've found that even running 90weight (which I've tested) is not going to fix a clearance problem in the engine. About the best you can do is run good valve seals, and a filter on your PCV line.

I run 5 quarts of non-synthetic 5w30 and 1 quart of Lucus oil additive. Since using the Lucus additive my car dosn't use oil like it use too.

I ended up going with RP. They only had 5w3o in stock.
Is 10w40 thin enough for our cars?

go with the suggest manufactures recommendation. I believe that is 5w30. They are the ones who did extensive testing on engine oil and there engines.

While this might be true to an extent, different oil brands are on different spectrums of the viscosity range. It has been said before that Mobil 1 5w30 is on the VERY low end of the spectrum, and is almost a 20 weight.

This being said I trust guys like Patman that actually try different oils and viscosities and have an analysis performed to see what is protecting the best.

Agreed. My car burned oil bad w/ Mobil 1 5w30 because it's so thin. Moved to Mobil 1 5w40 and have no problems.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic 0w30.
I know a engineer at GM. They ran an LT1 oil test on the engine dyno and they got the most HP using Mobil 1 synthetic 0w30. That's good enough for me.

A thinner OIL will always make more power.
TOO thin means extra wear on engine, not good.

RP 5w30 and M1 5w30 = worthless for our cars. Check BITOG and Blackstone Labs Chem-labs oil analysis results for ring wear. These oils for our cars are junk.

M1 5w40 T&SUV, Castrol 0w30 (gc), Redline 5w30, RP Racing 41.. all excellent ring wear analysis results.

Well Said. RP made claims of HP gain..

Some auto manufacturers used to falesly rate hp and get away with it.. one way they did was do a power output test of an engine w/o accessories, and the other way they did it was running the engine a little low on oil.

This is exactly what is happening w/ the 0w30 M1 oil.. and the RP 5w30.. its so thin, its as if you're running low on oil on the stuff you should be using....
