Default Is it illegal on the street?

I live in Ohio, and last year right before I put my car away at the end of October, I got pulled over because of my expired tags that i was trying to hold off on..haha.The cop came up and wrote me an $80 ticket and then just started talking to me about my car...and if i ran it at the track. He then was like "Well Im going to let it go but it is illegal to have a bottle of nitrous oxide in your car on the street".I told him i wanted to see it in the book and he said look it up...do any of you guys know for sure? Thanks

BTW-My bottle is mounted in the hatch window

That would depend on state and local laws, but if you leave it detached i dont see how they could deem it illegal

if its not attached with the nitrous line in anyway, you're just transporting it.

its a small DOT legal container, and they cant do anything about that.

if its hooked up, then it possibly becomes a issue.. there are no federal laws about it, however your state and local laws might have something about it.

in Texas for example, its legal to have, but illegal to use on the street.. meaning unless the officer can PROVE you're using it, its unenforceable.

In georiga its illegal to have a line connected to the bottle, although I got stopped and the cop shined the light right on it and didnt care.

Check your state laws.

Yeah that's if you were carrying a large quantity of it.

I beleive the law in ohio is if the bottle is open then its illegal and instant impounding of your car. My buddys dad is a detective and they put a nitrous system on his car and he just told him to leave it closed on the street.

thats correct.... for a 10,15, or even 20lb bottle, no special license or anything.

the only requirement is the bottle is within its date and is DOT approved..

Some states require a stamp or tag to transport it in your vehicle.Like this one for NJ Not all states have this, NJ was the first one I thought of.

I don't know if it's still true, but it seems that NOS did have some E.O numbers for some 50 state legal kits. Maybe those went away?

edit: I did some research and NOS does make some 50 state legal kit's, but it seems that "50 state legal" only applies to emission laws.

up until september of last year i used to wholesale nitrous in michigan. my distributor would deliver the mother tanks to my shop in a semi with all the placards on the side. now if i ran out of product and they couldnt deliver in time i would go to their warehouse in my suburban or lightning and throw 6 or 8 tanks in the back and they never had a problem that i didnt have placards on the vehicle.
im sure all states have different rules on this stuff but nitrous is not toxic, its only an oxidizer and nonreactive.

just FYI

in MOST states you dont need a permit to buy or sell the stuff, some companies will only sell to you in bulk if you can show them you have a buisness or will only deliver to a buisness address. another way to get gas to fill for yourself without alot of hassle is go to the distributors store front (just about all of them have one) with your "race car" and ask to set up an account to buy a couple of bottles a month for racing and show them you have nitrous in the car because their gonna be alittle resistant at first because of liability reasons but if they can verify that you have a lagitamet reason for buying the stuff you should be on your way. a buisness card that shows you own a race shop or work on performance cars will work too(to verify your need for gas).

didnt mean to steal the thread but ive passed up threads like this in the past and decided nows the time to put in my 2 cents.

You guys are lucky!! In Australia, it's illegal to even have the fogger plumbed into the manifold... Laws like that just make us try a little harder to build stealth systems for street use...
