Default How to paint ?

This may sound like a tard question but I painted my valve covers and intake but it seems to chip easy and flake off doesn't seem durable at all that's sanding it primer paint an clear and about 3 coats of each! But my buddy bought a fast intake that is painted and you can try ad scratch it but it doesn't chip and flake nowhere near like a rattle can that I use so what could I do to make it really durable like his ? Is I not rattle can ? Is it different with a gun? I'm just wondering all of this cuz this winter I will be painting my engine bay and I don't want it to flake or chip if it gets scratched kind of like the original paint on the car what can I do to achieve this ? Because I can just tell a difference from the feel of the 2 differen paints

are you atleast using high temp paint? they make the "engine enamel" line for a reason.

The process you are trying to compare is completely different. The paint on those intakes are professionally sprayed and heat cured, not just some rattle can BS.

And that's after the fact of whether or not you are even using high temp paint! You do realize that your intake is sitting in a confined and enclosed space on top of an engine with an operating temperature of about 200 degrees right?

Prep is the key
Scuff the whole piece
Wax and grease remover
For metal objects use etching primer
For plastic use a flex primer
Let cure for 24 hours
2 light color coats 15 min apart
2 medium color coats 15 min apart
For "like glass" finish allow to cure for 24 hours then wetsand using 1500 grit till smooth and dull
2 light coats of clears 10 min apart
2 medium coats of clear 20 min apart
Let cure for 24 hours before handling
Projects of mine

Gets expensive when you start doing a lot of stuff and in some cases some items can't be powder coated
