bad cats
Thanks Ryan, the reason is that the SES light is on and need to pass emmissions test. I took my car to a shop and was told that since my car was a california emmissions vehicle that I should replace them with dealer parts if not the SES light would come back on any truth to this.

I don't think the fact that it's a California car makes it any different with respect to the cats and SES light. Not sure if you can get away with aftermarket cats or not but you could just get the codes tuned out.

how many miles on the vehicle, federal law states 80K/8 years for emissions warranty, and I believe 00-02 cars got bumped to 120K through a TSB/other documentation. I would look into this first.
also note, it is illegal to install used cats on the vehicle, so you will not be able to buy used ones through a salvage yard, unless they have been tested (not cost effective at this time) so if you buy used, just buy them off this message board. there are hundreds of stock cats laying around removed at low miles.
