yes it can but be very careful... last tme I used a USB adapter w/my Edit for a write I ended up having to have the dealership reflash the PCM (and I got lucky the PCM wasn't toast) ... You'd be better off w/a PCMCIA USB card ... or perhaps trading the cable in for HPT

Ok...I guess that answers my question. I recently got a new laptop and the little sucker doesnt have a serial port. It has 2 USB ports and all of my cables are serial.

As stated in a previous post...USB or PCMCIA card.

The PCMCIA card is more stable and much faster (especially with LSEdit). This is the same card (model #) recommended by B&B Electronics but cheaper. I got excellent service. Card arrived in three days.

If you go with USB get a name brand one. Not a $9 cheapy. I also have an IOGear and have good luck with it.

You might want to do a search, there is a specific brand name USB cable as I recall that some have had issues with. A search will give the name.

Phil, I purchased LS1Edit when it was v1.3 and my laptop didn't have a serial port. I went to Radio Shack and purchased a USB/Serial convertor for $30 and it worked fine. About 3 weeks later Carputing came out with v1.4. I installed it and as they suggested I did a read before write. It took 28 mins to do the read so I did a buch of things including sending Carputing an email asking why it worked with v1.3 and not v1.4. The answer was, if it worked with v1.3 it should work with v1.4, there were no changes to the programming module that would affect reads/writes. I ended up purchasing a Quatech PCMCIA to serial card. another $110. It works great, no more problems. What I have been using the convertor for is EFILive V6 Pro. This way I don't have to change cables between tuning and logging.
I am really looking forward to EFILive's FlashScan v7 upgrade...
