CASE relearn / HPTuners - need help !
First off, this isn't your standard "what is it/how do I fix it" kind of question...
I have a PCM from a mail-order tuner that will not take a CASE relearn. I had three different dealers try to do it with a Tech II and none could... I originally bought this PCM back in 2002, after these issues I swapped to a new PCM (and dyno tuned with LS1edit). The new PCM did the case relearn no problem - however the new PCM is locked and I can't get it unlocked.
I have the old PCM back in (which isn't locked), and took another crack at the CASE relearn now that I have HPTuners.
The problem is I can start the relearn, but no matter how fast or slow I open the throttle it doesn't succeed. Too fast = "TPS High/RPM High", too slow the relearn aborts.
The tune is waaaay rich, it's burning my eyes at idle. Is it possible that the tune is so far off it can't do the relearn ? If I flash it with a better tune is it possible that it would do the relearn, or is the PCM hoarked ?
Need to know if I need to buy (another) new PCM or if I should try writing a good tune to this PCM and try the relearn.
Thanks for any help.

Hrm, hadn't thought of that... I can even bump up the idle to help keep it running... I'll try it tomorrow.
It shouldn't hurt anything to run the stock program for 10-15 minutes with my mods, right ? 11.1:1 stage 2 heads, 222/224 .571"/.571" 114 LSA cam.

Quick summary of what I know : P1331 - Crank position relearn. The PCM can lose the position of the crankshaft when the crank/reluctor wheel are replaced, and/or when a new PCM is put into a car it needs to learn the crank position of the new engine. This is done by doing what's called a "CASE Relearn", which can now be done with HPTuners/LS1Edit but was previously only able to be done at the dealer with a Tech II.
The only reason you'd need to do it is if you're throwing that code.
Without the learned crank position, the PCM can't monitor misfires accurately or predict the position of the crank accurately.

The crank relearn will not proceed at all if you
have some emissions codes. Do not know what
might happen if your tune had tests turned off
that prevented the readiness tests from going
to "complete". In my case it was a mystery
EVAP system thing that kept the relearn from
running, something that EFILive couldn't see a
code for but the dealership could & replaced a
gas tank gizmo.
But it sounds like you're getting further into the
drill than I did. When I had the emissions-balk
it wouldn't even give me the green light for gas
pedal.
Check for incomplete-readiness tests though.

Thanks ! There aren't any other DTC's stored. I'll check the emissions readiness stuff when I get home today, and try flashing a stock program with a raised idle.
Hopefully it will be able to do the relearn and I'll be able to use that PCM for my new tune.
