Default Alternator charging question.

Im wondering if anybody has bypassed the little red wire to the alternator to keep it charging.Im on BS3 and i want to get rid of the PCM.Anybody know what i have to do to get it to charge without running that wire or bypassing it someway.

I think if you jump battery voltage to that wire the alternator will put out full charge. I am sure that will ear out the alternator faster though.

You can put a 400ohm or so (I think thats what I used) 1/2 watt resistor in series with 12v key on power. I'm pretty sure you can just run 12v to the regulator also, I dont think the 'turn on' voltage has anything to do with output but I never tried it with 12v direct, I used the resistor.

So your saying i can jump the little red wire to a 12v source. But you used a 400ohm resistor on that wire.Doe's the altenator have a bulit in regulator to prevent the battery from being overcharged.

Yes the regulator is all inside the alternator, the PCM (or cluster in 98's that have a 470ohm resistor in line with the alt) just sends a 'turn on' voltage which is 5 volts I believe. I would go ahead and stick the resistor in there to be safe, I found an article on the net describing the regulator a while back and it said anything from 3-16 volts would work to get it going but I didnt try it.

there's some more info via heavy searching this site.

There should be 10-10.5 vdc on that wire for proper operation (per service manual)
