It depends on "the money". I'm running a $40 truck
MAF I got off eBay, with the screen popped out. It
works fine. Had to "tune" it (just wrote a stock truck
MAF table). Would I spend $199.95 or more, for some
hype? Hells no. If you're sticking with a stock TB /
intake then I'd find a junk MAF and pop its screen,
swap on the front end piece and be done with it,
keep your original screen just in case of whatever.

If you are getting airflow that approaches the max of your MAF then you need one, otherwise no.

How about you just save your money and get a Speed Density Tune done by someone that knows how to do one that will compensate for all weather conditions.

+1. Stock MAF will support 500 RWHP no need for a larger one till well after that.

I would tell you that first you need a ported throttle body. After that I got a fast times 85mm lid. I also got a 85 truck maf. It is alot bigger. I ported it and got rid of the screen. At the time I did it I just the lid and MAF. Cost 260.00. There was higher Manfold pressure. So this was a restiction. Bottom line. Get cheap MAF bigger lid and tune. I did not have to pay for tuning. I saw gain.

The stock electronics will support 500rwhp is true, but it doesn't mean that a stock 78mm maf will hurt flow compared to a larger 85mm maf.

I hear that statement all the time, and you could say that the stock exhaust manifolds and exhaust will support 500rwhp as well, but that doesn't mean there isn't a gain to be made by swapping to something that flows better.

Swapping a maf to a larger unit is more about reducing the induction restriction to flow, just like going to headers or an offroad ypipe.

You may not see much of a gain, since the 78mm maf flows the same amount as your stock throttle body, but is a neccesary mod to do when you go with a larger throttle body or intake manifold.

You have to understand that there are two elements to a maf in terms of making power:

1. ability to flow a specific CFM
2. the electronics side of the equation.

Well ok so i think i'll stay with stock maf since I bought it from GM last year...but what about the bigger MAF ends??? Are they worth the 60-70 dollars that they sell for???? I wanna buy the Fast toys 85mm lid thats why I was considering the bigger MAF....but maybe just going with the bigger maf ends would be ok??....

Yes 85 mm lid. No bigger maf ends. You can find a truck maf for not much. Get it tune it or leave it be.

I still have the stock 78mm MAF on my car and make over 500 rwhp. Im sure there are some gains to be made with a bigger one, but there are better places to spend the cash to make my setup better.

Does anyone know the the cross section area of a stock maf? I do. Why do people always rave about the performance increase of bigger throttle bodies and cold air, but the same ol' maf is fine to 500hp. I beleive the Maf will work on a 500hp engine, but my factory radial tires also work on my 600 plus horse 5000k convertor car. Work and optimal are different. Get what I am saying?

Yep. But a bigger MAF is a waste of money. I have tested with my stock MAF and in Speed Density (no MAF) and the difference is nothing at WOT. The only reason that I run in SD is because it is easier to get the surging out of the big cam and the 98 maxes out the MAF much sooner than the 99+.

Keep the stocker, or trash it and go Speed Density. Save your money.

What if you suspect your MAF is bad and you need to buy a new one anyway. Is it worth getting a bigger unit like a SLP MAF at that point or is the stocker still the way to go?
