Default about to buy my 1st T/A

hi guys need some advice here im about to buy a 1998 T/A but there are some probs the owner says the cars Odom reads 178,000 miles but that he thinks the car has less? because the rear end was swaped so that messed the od he thinks it has 120,000. also he says he had the engine rebuilt with new forged pistons and titanium rings tranny also rebuilt new ,t converter plus new cooper 50" tires all the way around it, new rotors with new ceremic z max pads new altinator with a new optima battery new power steering and new fresh black paint, he also said when he got the car he was told it does not have the original motor but he and the shop that did the rebuild think it has the factory motor.vin and title are clean KBB 5800 in good shape

so he wants 5K for it im goin to see it on the 25th is this a bad idea

I would offer what I thought the car is worth at the current milage reading. no more...... If you do that and you learn the milage is wrong, you will feel lik eyou got a deal. If you pay thinking the guy is correct and later learn he was wrong, you will feel like you got ripped off.

If he has the paperwork for the rebuild it my be worth it, But make sure he has real receipts for the parts and is not lying because of the miles. Your not going to get 58K mile difference do to gears unless he has 456 gears in it,that sound like bull sh*t. Don't go by what he thinks go by what you see and what he can prove. If you got 5k you can find a car with better miles on it. I'd say keep looking.

The odometers are digital. Swapping the rear end has no effect on the odometer reading. Sounds like the seller is just trying to make the deal sound better.

I don't think anyone would be strange enough to rotate the wheels enough to add 58,000 miles to the odometer.

FYI the gauge clusters are interchangeable and can be swapped to a lower mileage cluster..the mileage stays stored in each cluster. Just so you know. Not in this instance but for future reference. If he can provide any kind of reciepts it seems like a good deal. Personally if the rest of the car looked good I'd give him 5K for it.

Run a Carfax, that should confirm the mileage. It may give you a better stance to deal with. Check all receipts and take it to a trusted mechanic to check it out. 5k sounds OK if everything measures up. I wouldn't pay more though.

From my exp you should save up and buy a nicer car. you want to start with a good base car or you will spend more $$$ fixing crap than the price of a mint TA

Sounds too fishy for my taste.

I think I would just keep looking.
I know you probably want to buy the car because you want a BADASS TA. BUT there are plenty out there.

Save up a little more cash and keep your eyes peeled.

Rebuilt bottom end with forged pistons? New rear? For only 5k?

Plus i hope he didnt tell you 50" tires and you believed it, i honestly hope that that was a typo..

First of all, changing gear ratio without recalibrating WILL show more than actual mileage. It doesn't matter, however, since the engine is turning at higher RPM and is actually wearing at whatever rate the axle ratio is. Therefore the guy telling you "the mileage is actually less" is bullshit as far as the engine is concerned.

Also, a rebuilt engine and a repaint are not a bonus - they indicate a worn out car that may have lots of hidden problems.

Uhm yeah, thats false... It will read higher with a gear swap. It will also rack up more miles if you put a taller tire under it. Tuning is not just for mph when you do a tire/gear change... The odometer is calibrated to read how many miles it is racking up with the stockers if you change them it will be going further per rotation.

With a taller tire, you're going further each time the axle makes a rotation than with the smaller tire. The car is covering more distance..an inch or 2 every time the axle makes the same 1 revolution. Say with a 28" tire and 100 revolutions you'll have gone 2800 inches, with a 26" tire you'll have gone 2600 inches on the same amount of revolutions on the axle.
