Default Need opinions on future buy,

I know you all get it a lot but I hope you don't mind one more thread haha

I'm looking at buying one of two goats, one is and 05 with 83k the other is an 04 with 29k. They're both for 16k.

What would you do? 6.0 with 80+ or 5.7 with > 30?

it would depend on the condition of the cars. im partial to the 05 with the LS2. mileage can be deceiving . 29k of leadfooted hell can destroy a car, 80k of adult hwy miles really doesnt hurt anything if all the fluids were kept up. really need to research both cars history, then decide . hope this helps.

Buy that one. It's pretty.

18's, a drop, and some HID's and that car is pretty much done exterior wise.

I like the LS2 personally. When buying my GTO, I was going back and forth between LS2's with more mileage, and cheap 04's with less miles. I really wanted the LS2 for me, because I knew mods would come slowly, and I wanted to start out with as much power as I could. I do like to go to the track, so staying competitive with the new competition was important. What are your plans for the car? Do you like the 04 smooth hood, or 05+ w/ hood scoops? Split dual rear exhaust and valance, or the 04 with single side exit. 05 has better breaks and a slightly stronger trans in the A4. I like all GTO's, but am partial to the 05/06, just because they are upgraded a little. That, is a big split in mileage though....I got my 05 with 59k miles for $11.5 fyi. Good deals are out there.

I would go with the '04 with less miles. If you're upgrading stuff anyways then after a few mods there's not much of a difference between the ls1 and ls2, especially when you start getting into the more serious modifications. The brakes are bigger with the '05-'06 but that's an easy swap and if you like the look of the '05-'06 hood and rear bumper you can swap that on really easy, as well. If I was deciding between those 2 I would choose the car that has over 50k miles less. I also don't like the drive-by-wire of the ls2. I'd much rather have a cable driven throttle. I've talked to people with the ls2 and they said the drive-by-wire is a PITA at times. Just my 2 cents...

Depends what you want it for.

If you just want a quick car for the street, and you're never going to race it or beat on it. Get the 04, you aren't going to miss the LS2 over the LS1 if the extra 50hp doesn't get put to use.

With that being said, if you like the looks of one more than the other its something else to consider.

Mine has 81,6xx on it right now. NO problems from regular use. Any parts replaced were drag racing related.
Don't be worried about the high miles if the car has been taken care of.

If your a street racer, I'd go the ls2. Even the ls2 is getting left behind by the new 5.0, 6.4 Hemi's, and it's a good race with 6.1 Hemi's, LS1 F-body's, and 6.2 Camaro's (until they start to mod). With the LS1 and an average driver, you taking up the rear of the v8 car pack on the street...that's stock of course. You can find better deals then those just on these forums. Over on ls1gto, there is a thread where a guy is looking for an ls2 GTO, one responder has an LS2 with under 40k, and he wants $15k for it. Hell, I would take 15k for my car and 68k miles lol

^LMAO

Gettin left behind by the 5.0 and Hemi's.
I'd give it to the Mustangs, but just because of the factory 3.73's and weight advantage.
And the LS3 Camaro, give me a break, those things just ******* suck all around.
A good race with the 6.1 Hemi's.....FAR from it.

LMAO^^^^ So, in LS2 form, the GTO is a high 12, mainly low 13 second car. 5.0's have gone mid 12's already on a few occasions, and haven't been out nearly as long. Yes it takes the 3.73 version to beat the LS2, although they do put down more power stock, and respond to mods better as well. The new 392 Chally's go mid 12's as well. They've already got a 12.4. LS3's are all over the place. Some run well into the 13's, and some well into the 12's. Its really hit or miss, but they respond very well to mods. 6.1 Hemi's...low 13 second car (that has also ran 12's stock), right there with an LS2 GTO (the GTO being more inconsistent). VERY good race for a stock LS2

The driver is the difference in all these claims of 12-13 sec passes in all these cars. I think the rustang, as much as i hate to say it, has the upper hand right now. Average drivers are getting really low 13s and high 12s from the new 5.0. At my home track LS2 goats are mid to high 13 sec cars with average drivers on street tires. My best time is 13.4 at 109 at that track on street tires with my 05 m6. i think the solid axle under the 5.0 gives it the advantage off the line with the average driver. just more forgiving.

lol

I said that the mustang has the upper hand on the LS2 gto. But the "record" mid 12 passes you're talking about are at private track rentals, -DA situations, etc.... Not sure how much drag racing you've done, but they certainly aren't the norm for the cars. Also like I said, they are a few hundred pounds lighter as well as 3.73s.

As for the 392 Challenger, Car and Driver says 12.9 at 114. I see 13.x in the sub 110 range, on youtube. Don't really know much about it and its brand new so I haven't seen much. But for the OLD 6.1's....not a contest if the record passes are low 13's and 12.9x's. I know a ton of stock GTO's that run 13.0x

And I'm not even going to argue with your camaro statement. Its just ridiculous. The day I see a (stock) camaro run a 12.....hahahahaha.

Where do you get the information that the GTO is inconsistent? Mine is a manual and is ridiculously consistent, as long as I don't get behind a ricer **** that drags water all over the track lol.

I'm not saying the GTO is a magical, unbeatable car, BUT the cars you picked to beat it are just ridiculous. Outside of the mustang.

i say both are a little bit too much money. keep looking for about the same price or tad more you cannot beat the value of a c5 z06...i bought one for mid teens last year around this time from california. theyre out there just have to look. but if youre stuck on the goats go for it, ive seen them for alot cheaper with good mileage on them, specially the 2004 models.

I've done a bit of drag racing. Not nearly as much as most of the guys here I imagine, but I would say I've been down the track 200+ times. The inconsistency with the GTO is pretty much a known fact. Skinny 235/245 tires on this car make it hard to launch. At my home track, I ran 13.5 at 103 in my a4 stock. Most of the other cars are manuals I see, and whne you get guys out there who have only ran a handful of times, you see LOTS of 14 second runs. We have a pretty big local GTO group, and even the guy who is now trapping 135mph says he made a few 16 second passes in his m6 stock. I actually ran a 15 myself. Believe me, I'm not boasting up the Camaro. I've seen consistent mid 13's from then. There was one guy, who I talked to for a bit, who did not have an intake, exhaust/headers, or Nitrous (possibly tune I guess, but said he was stock), who was hitting 12.8-12.9 in cool air. It does respond well to mods though, that's pretty much a fact.

Yes lots of GTO have ran high 12's low 13's, so have the 6.1's. I wasn't mentioning "record" passes. I believe the fastest SRT8 300C went 12.6. I have raced them at the track too

Yes, I agree. I have a good friend in NC who just bought a 3.73 base 5.0. He's only taken it to the track twice in a 2000+ DA. He went 13.0 at 112 his first time, and 12.8 at 109 his second time out. I could never convince buddies on other forums the LS2 GTO could run high 12's, because they always see low 14's and high 13's from bad/inexperienced driver's. I've never seen a stock GTO at our track run a 12. Best I;ve seen was mid 13's, and a lot of 14's
