Default which vortec heads are the good ones?

Which vortec(L31) head casting number is the ones that people use for their builds. I know there is a good casting# and a bad one that has bigger valve stems and specially hardened valve seats that both hinder flow. Now hot rod mag says "Look for casting number 12558062, but avoid casting number 10239906", but a buddy of my dad's says they got it backwards i dont know who to believe. can anybody with ACTUAL EXPERIENCE tell me which im looking for?

that is the same gm part # that both casting # are for. they send you either one when you order. my understanding is you have no choise. the heads you want to stay away from are the 906 castings that came off heavy duty trucks, the exhaust seats restrict flow

Scoggin Dickey has awsome Vortec cyl. head packages. Like heads already machined for higher lift cams with the correct springs to match. check them out. SDPC2000.com (i think)

I do a lot of those head and yes stay away from the 906 heads. They have ex. seat inserts that don,t help flow.Unles you are going to 1.600 valve and some porting.

We sell a ton of vortec heads as you may have heard. For a long time there has been some conterversy about which castings are the best. Some will tell you that the 1st design heads (906) are the best flowing heads. Then you will get some who argue the point and say the lastest design (8062)castings are the best. You can only get the lastest castings~unless you find a set in a wrecking yard.We believe that the (8062) are the best, and for your FYI,these heads are only good up to a 0.450"lift cam.PERIOD! If you have a larger camshft, then we offer a upgraded set with different springs and retainers, and we machine the guide down .080"too keep the retainer from coming down a crushing the seal.VORTEC heads rock, let us know, they work great on a carburated application, you can easly pick up 30hp!
thanks!

I have set of the 062 that I got from GMPP. . Wish that now I had the larger springs put on. RW flat top 4V, Lunati 480 cam, roller rockers,RPM air gap intake ,and a holley 750. No tuning on the carb and not really messed with the timing. Dynoed last night at 290hp/330tq in my camaro. These heads cant be beat for the price and better qualities than the old style heads.

some realy kick *** vortec heads are the protopline vortec heads. We have a set on a 355, 10:1 comp internaly balanced with a comp cam 224-230@50dur and 510-520 lift and it runns 12.20's in the 1/4 in a 3300lb car.

IMO~The (GM) heads are the best buy ($499.95pr)Are you aware that DART has a killer VORTEC out?

I am not sure what a 193 vortec head is? But I will say a vortec head is from 1996 and up! What is 193?

I hate to break your heart, but a 193 casting is not a vortec head,it is a TBI head, non vortec 1987-1995 trucks. You are better off using those heads for a boat anchor, and spending your $$$ on VORTEC HEADS!!

Yeah they are a good price, but upgrade them adn the price goes up. Yes I am aware of the dart heads, but afr also has bad *** vortec heads. As for the topline you cant beat the performance for the price.

As for the best sbc chevy head you can get that would be afr hands down.

well i bought the ones in jegs and i ran them just out the box and pretty good head for the money. But I wished I would of bought some AFRs or some Dart heads for a little more. My car went a low 13's Out the box heads you can only run up to a .480 lift. You can run more lift if you so some work to them. I am using a lunati Brackett master 292 cam lift is .480/.480 rpm range 2000-6000 the cam sounds really mean but i only can use 1.5 rockers.
Also my friend is using vortec heads on a 383 with 4 bolt splade block scat crank and JE pistons the heads have some work done ported/polished 2.02 1.60 and i am not sure about the cam its not as agressive as mine. The lift is .480/ .490, he has more lift but not as much duration. He was looking for low end torque. The motor is in a 1979 camaro with a th400 a stock stall and a 3.08 gear with drag radials. The car went 12.70 with no NOS I hope that helps you
