Default Hendrick Motorsports Camaro SS? Who has the REAL information?

Hey guys, I had a guy email me about his car with some questions and information, and I'm completely stumped! I'm not known for being a quasi-expert on the 4th gens here, but I'm known for it a bit more on CamaroZ28.com's message board, so I sometimes get asked for information about this and that.

Does anyone have any OFFICIAL information about this car, or any of the Hendrick Motorsports Camaros in general? SLP and Hendrick both lack records in their current databases.

You can see the article I wrote and pictures of the car on my site here:
http://brangeta.googlepages.com/4thg...ohistory223322

It'd be easier to read it there than for me to copy and paste everything over at 2am.

Any help would be appreciated!

This is from another thread:
I don't think Hendrick did any performance mods to the cars, it was an appearance package that SLP installed for them.

The LT1 Hendrick MS package included:

Chrome 17" x 9" Firehawk chrome wheels
Heritage Stripes on hood, roof, and deck lid
Hendrick Custom floor mats
Hendrick Dash Plaque
Hendrick Key Fobs
Hendrick Sail Panel Badges
Hendrick Car Cover
Quaker State Lube Package
Dual Dual Performance Exhaust System
BF Goodrich Comp TA Tires
After speaking with a guy at SLP (street legal performance) he confirmed that a division of theirs did produce the 1997 Camaro SS Hendrick motor sport special edition for chevorlet.(HMS cars). The production numbers are posted at several web sites on the net. SLP no longer has the production numbers in their data base.

As for all other HMS cars produced in 1997 I contacted several Hendrick's Auto dealerships in the Carolina's. According to all of them a person could by a Camaro off the lot and then choose from several options that were offered in the Hendrick motor sport specail edition package. Ranging from tuned exhaust, performance intake,zr1 wheels, special spoilers, ground effects and so on and so on,depending on how deep your pockets are. The dealership would then install the options that were chose and ofcourse put the HMS badging on the car. Therefore the production numbers are unknown. All three dealerships did say that the cars are rare and safely could agree that there were fewer than 100 made.

I know that you and I briefly chatted online about the LT4 Hendrick cars, and those I can give you gobs, of info, based upon all the paperwork I got from the purchase on my Hendrick LT4.

I know SLP did the SS upfits for Hendrick.

Other tid bits I have shared before . . . . need to get off my duff, and compile more for you.
  • There are nine Hendrick Motorsports LT4 Special Edition Camaro SS's.
  • The 1997 30th Anniversary LT4 SS's are SLP car #'s 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 16, 23, 43 and 71.
  • The #1 SS LT4 was Rick Hendrick's personal car (do not know where this car is).
  • The Hendrick Autogroup owns eight Chevrolet dealerships so each dealership sold one of the HMS Camaros to the public.
  • Dealerships were: City Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet (Durham, NC), Hendrick Automall, Performance Chevrolet, Colonial Chevrolet, Superior Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet (Charleston, SC) and Quality Automotive.
  • My LT4 SS was origianly sold from Performance Chevrolet.
  • MSRP was $47,250 - I believe they all sold for over $50,000.
  • All nine were delivered at the same time at a gala affair on June 25, 1997 held at Hendrick MS Headquarters.
  • Airfare and accomodations included.
  • The delivery was to occur at Charlotte Motor Speedway but it was booked.
  • Many of the nine cars are signed by SLP members, Hendrick, and some Nascar Drivers.
  • Purchasers had lunch with Rick Hendrick and Terry LaBonte
  • Jeff Gordon and Ricky Craven were a day late, and very few cars have their signature.
  • Matt Murphy was with SLP when this program was run.
  • Changes to the car are mostly appearance
  • Embroidered LT4 Mats
  • Hendrick LT4 Dash Plaque
  • Hendrick Key Fobs
  • Hendrick LT4 & SS Car Cover
  • Hendrick LT4 Special Edition Sail Panel Badges
  • Dual Dual Performance Exhaust
  • Level III Sport Suspension
  • Came with a short video of them being built at SLP

Other Info:
  • Only two HMS Camaros have the all white leather, the other seven have the white with houndstooth inserts.
  • The Hendricks crew did not like the exhaust, it was too quiet, but could not be changed in time for delivery.
  • The dual dual exhaust is interesting, it has extra resonators AFTER the muffler just before of the tail pipes.
  • Buyers had photos taken with their new Camaro and Terry Labonte at the HMS "Winners Circle".
  • The cars were delivered with a case of Quaker State Syn Quest Oil & other QS, stuff - which I current do not have.
  • Three of the nine were sold to mutial friends from Utah, two have been resold, the other is still owned by the original purchaser.
  • One car the owner had the outside of the hood signed and clear coated.
  • I have made contact with only one other HMS owner #4 of 9.

There is a start . . . . I own Hendrick Car #5, LT4 #6

There is one of the Hendrick LT1 cars for sale locally here. 97K miles, automatic, I was told it is in very nice shape, biggest flaw is a crack in the dash. I don't have the money to spend right now and I'd want one w/lower miles.

Here are a few images of the Hendrick unveil. First shot is the vehicles under their covers. Second is a random owner pulling the cover off of his Hendrick SS and the last is a group shot with Rick Hendrick, his crew and the Hendrick SS owners:

Funny you ask, I saw that image in my library a few weeks ago. Next time I have to search for an image, I'll take a look for it.

Exsta that has to be the nicest LT4 car I have ever seen
I almost bought a LT4 Hawk but backed out because of my bad left leg
I ended up with a 97 Hawk A4 but have always loved the LT4 cars.
How many miles are on your HMS LT4 CAMARO SS?

Thank you very much. As for mileage . . . how does 59 miles sound . . . (yes only two digits) . . . I am the third owner.

Always wanted a LT4 and now I have one, just got it late last year.

i didnt know these cars existed. i didnt know they made LT4 Hawk's. These 30th Anniv cars are special to me because my dad owns one of the "regular" 30th anniv 97 SS camaro's. It's got 112K on the clock and still has the stock opti! I cant imagine how expensive these cars must cost being only 9 of them...wow. i'm pretty shocked. i would love to own one some day. I still believe the ONLY 4th gen dumdumdumdum's that will be worth anything someday will be the 100 LT4 camaro's. These HMS cars will be worth prolly double.

The "regular" cars may be worth something some day, but only with low miles.

No problem Andy, I do have some more of #9. I remember that car being in the local newspaper because the owner of what use to be Dave Heather Chevrolet had just bought HMS LT4#9 and wanted to "show it off (which meant it was for sale) so I headed over to the dealership and snapped as many pictures as I could. If I dig a bit, I might even find the original newspaper article (I kept that of course too). If my memory serves me right, I believe that was June of 2000 and he was asking 50K for it then, mileage is unknown.

Dave: Those a excellent photos, do you have any more you could share? Thanks for sharing!

I have a few hundred photo's of this event, but until I get a new assistant - scanning the negatives are a pain. My library has over 100K photo's and negatives plus hundreds of videos. One day I'll get them all online.
