Static-like, intermittent noise - playing CDs

Static-like, intermittent noise - playing CDs I get noise that sounds like radio static, but is
in time with the music, on my stock Monsoon.
Seems to be coming on more frequently of late.
Comes and goes. I only ever play CDs, through
the changer. It doesn't seem to be crusty pots
or anything easy like that.
Is this a known / common problem or am I just
lucky?

It seems to be specific to the trunk changer; the front
CD is OK, radio is OK, changer is full of noise. Is there
any method to clean the optics? Thinking that might have
something to do with it. I've reseated the connector
but that didn't help any.
