security light on, camaro wont start. how to fix
a friend of mine has a 2000 z28. screen name LMDz28
a couple of times when going to start the car the security light comes on and the car will not start. The few times it happens, he just waits a few minutes tries again and the car starts.
What causes this? and what is a good fix besides a new ignition column?
is the key worn out?
is their a chip reader in the ignition that is worn out?
can the security be bypassed and how?
is their a way to clean it? if dirt causes the problem.
We hope to get this fixed fast because we are taking the car racing friday night august 17. It would suck to be at the track with a car that does not start. LOL
I have never had this problem with my 2001 z28 but my 94 z28 did the same thing a couple of times but then I drove it another 1xx,xxx miles and never had the problem again. Its odd....

Does the search work right now? If so do one. There are a million threads on this. A guy just posted the same thing yesterday. I know the search sucks though so it might be down right now. To answer your question it might be just the key, have him try his spare. The security can be bypassed using the correct resistor there is a write up on it somewhere on here. My spare key worked for about a year then I finally got it fixed right with a new cylinder. $450 at the chevy dealership.

the search was not working at the time of the post....
figuring out the correct resistor sounds like trial and error since their is 15 different resistors.
sadly he does not have a spare key, so it sounds like he will be getting a new one made tonight.
I was hoping there was a just a quick fix.... guess not...

1. try cleaning key
2. try using spare key
if 1 and 2 fail
3. read resistance in the chip in your key with a multimeter and match that with resistors from radio shack and wire them up were it says in this diagram
PROPERTY OF shbox.com
seems complicated but its actually very simple i had to do it to my 98 Z28
hope this helps
