Say around the same output and amp, will the square one out perform the circle subwoofer?
I've wondered about this, and havn't seen a post about this thought i'd ask.

all sub models depend really on the quality of the sub....me personally i hate kicker so i would go with a solobaric but i know jl and rockford probably outperform them as well....but its really on what u wanna spend and how much bass you want out of your setup

well let me put it this way, I know of a guy who put 5 (FIVE!!) Kicker's (the square ones) in his coupe Civic. I believe that they were 18s? some where around there, sure it hit pretty hard, but A Fellow Drummer that i know had 2 12" Round, Audiobahn Flame Series subs and it matched his 5 in sound. but maybe thats because they have to have a minimum of 2400 watts to run them? hey I don't know but I saw the decibel meter, and my ears had this funny ring for like a week after.....

Theoretically, yes due to the cone having slightly more cone area. Real world, not really. Plus the goofy suspension is finiky to me.
Just stick with good subwoofers that work well for what you are listening to. You aren't going to really hear a difference just because the woofer has a square cone.

My personal experience with them has been that L7's and L5's put out a good amount of bass and move alot of air. They seem to me like a sub more suited for SPL rather than sound quality although with proper tuning you could probably get decent sound quality from one but not as good as you would get from a standard round sub.
On another note the Boston Acoustics SPG555 is an oval sub that is very good and moves alot of air also even though it is also not the norm for speaker shape. I had the opportunity to hear one the other day and it was nice!!
As stated it more depends on your listening tastes as to performance. I've heard some systems that are made for strict SPL performance and they are basically good for one VERY loud burp of bass. That doesn't mean I would want to listen to that in my music. Performance is relative to what you want out of a sound system.

I have gone through wuite a few dirrerent subs Square and Round...I personally am NOT A KICKER HATER....quite a few people here dont like them but the Solo L7 I had sounded very good and when I had 2 hit very hard...The 5 18" subs in a civic would not be anywhere close to sounding how they are supposed to sound because there is no way to have the right amount of space for the subs....5 18" L7's would be loud as crap if hooked up anywhere near right. But OP its all up to what you want I say Kicker has a quality product in sound and bass but thats just my opinion....to me Kicker =

15" Kicker L7s are bad. I had two in my explorer with 2 1200watts amps. I had them bridged together at 2 ohms. I was hitting 158s on the dash before i got rid of it. Other people usually had 4 15s compared to my 2 15s. They are loud if you give them enough air space.

I don't think it's a trend. Some people run them, yes, but not enough that I've ever had any friends with them. Though I don't go to shows or anything (but yes, I have several friends with subs).
It's not all about being loud.

You can find the Kicker L7s for good prices if you look hard enough...when i had my setup ...there werent many systems that could hang with it. Im not saying that JL is bad...all you have to do is get the right size box and the right amps. Get you a 1200 Mono amp on it and bring it down to 1ohm. Or either get 2 4ohms and bridge them down to 2ohms. These speakers can put out some massive power if set up right.

L7s with the right amount of power in the right airspace preform really well, but then again so does any other high quality sub (as long as the airspace is correct and plenty of power is available)

I guess its just a personal preference. When i had mine.....i never had a bad thing said about the way they sounded..They werent distorting or anything like that. I tryed MTX, JL..and some other local brands of subs..and the L7s br far sounded the best.

It's mostly because there have just been no SQ square subs made. Though it would be harder to do. Circle is ideal because all points of the suspension have constant pressure because they are equidistant from the motor. Square/rectangle are the worst of the common shapes.
