Default electrical problem: short?

ok, so the history: about a year after i got the car i had to change the alternator (had to change it 3 times in a week due to defective rebuilt alternators).

since then it had works great exp it occationally doesnt start in the rain, it was rare but has become more frequent...

so heres the problem, driving home from work i stop at a red light and about 10 seconds into sitting there all the electrical turned off, as if i stalled, everything turned off and right back on within a second, and the car was still running, figured it was the alternator and kept going,

pulling into a parking spot i look at the rpms and the speedo and see it at 3000rpm and 50mph, my foot was on the clutch and i was rolling at 3mph.. it continued to move between 2500-3500rpm and 40-60mph, this continued spiratically until i killed the engine

could that be the alternator? a short? a short and the alternator?
