Default Security light

For the last couple of weeks, my Security light has been on in my car. My car has no alarm, so I' m assuming it has something to do with the VATS system. The car has about 130K miles on it, and this is the first time I' ve encountered this issue. I have access to a computer to check the code, but I would just like to know if anyone else has had a similar issue, and knew what could cause this.

The security light in my 2000 z28 has been on since I bought it used w/ 40k+ I've asked around about it and came up with nothing. The dealership said they could "fix it" but would have to use their diagnostic tools and charge $$$. So, for the past 3 years it's been on and I've just ignored it. You may end up doing the same as I can't seem to see what actually needs to be "fixed," if anything.

Well, ya know it does kinda match the SES light that' s been on for 5-6 years..... I know what those codes are though, need to get them tuned out of the computer.

Same here. I've had it on for like 20K with no problems. But I does get kind of annoying.

Well, as long as the car starts and runs properly, I guess it' s not much to worry about. I figured this would be a rare issure, but with so many responses at almost 1AM...it seems a lot more common than I imagined.

The only time I have starting issues, has something to do with the sensor on the clutch I believe. I' ll push in the clutch pedal to start the car, and it sometimes acts like I never touched the pedal, let off and push it again, starts right up.

my security light has been turning on also. when it does i cant start the car. i just give it a couple of minutes. theres a vats system mod you can do. i did it to my previous trans am. theres a write up somewhere here, im sure if you type in "security light" or "vats system" you will come across it. its pretty easy. hope this helps.

Mine did that like 3 years ago and it would do the exact same thing that when the light was on it wouldn't start for a little while. It kept doing it till it finally didn't start. I ended up having to take it to the dealership to replace the ignition switch. It cost me bout $300+ back then.

The chip in the key wears down over time and no longer makes the proper contact when you turn the key. The car doesnt see the correct resistance and throws the code. You have two options, A: get a new key cut from the dealership. B: Get a good 12v installer to bipass the the vats system by putting the correct resister in line on the vats wire. Down side of B is that now the car can be started with a screwdriver. Hope this helps.
