The Racing Scene.
Hello,
So, I'm basically making this thread to get some information and possibly guidance.
I'm 21 and am in college for automotive. I worked at an independent garage for a bit, then worked at a dealership for a bit -- doing your ordinary car work at both places.
I'm no stranger to cars...but, when it comes to modifying them, I try to keep my mouth closed and my ears open, for the most part.
I don't think a dealership is for me. While I love working on cars...doing inspections, brake jobs, and etc. for 8+ hours a day isn't for me.
I'm wondering if there are many jobs out there that strictly focus on the tuning/modifying aspect that I can get my foot in the door with. Maybe I'm young and dumb and just want a fast car, but it is something that interests me.
Racing and modifying have been my main interest since when I first got into this. I'd rather say I built my car than say I took it to a shop and gave them a blank check.
I think just about anyone can slap a supercharger and some parts on a car, but, I want to go deeper.
It's like...when you're building an engine, in the end, how do you know if it's going to handle the power you want to throw at it?
How do you know if your build would be better with one huge turbo, or twin turbos, or compound turbos, etc.?
It's stuff like that I'd like to know the answer to, but I don't really know where to begin finding concrete answers to my questions.
So, I'm basically making this thread to get some information and possibly guidance.

Honestly dude, change your major.
Dealership life, isn't for you. 10 year vet myself...left the dealership scene a year ago. Happily. If your into performance, find a local company, do grunt work,...and learn. Learn, learn learn. Don't just watch, do...that's the only way your gonna learn.
As far as gaining knowledge, hands on is the BEST way.... the internet, should be an alternative. Good information on boost,..could be found in the forced induction section of this forum. I will tell you, the street racing section has perhaps the stupidest people on the site when it comes to actual knowledge, so, already your starting off wrong on your quest for knowledge.
I would consider reading a book, when it comes to engine building/configurations, etc. If your interested in boost,..Corky Bell has a good book about it.
