Default WRX from a roll

Well coming back from my friends house on I10 I ended up side by side with a WRX sti. We both lined up at around 80....He punched it first, he was a little more than a car infront of me when i got on it. To my suprise the awd wasn't being pulled at first. I stayed even with him about a car infront of me to about 105 or so then i slowly started reeling him...By 120 I was a half car ahead and the race was over. We both exited and chatted a little at a stoplight unfortunetly he was turning so i couldn't race him from a stop. He also mentioned he was all stock. Is 80 a bad speed to start on a Auto ls1? I was expecting to do somewhat better. This was also my first race ever!

First off, good kill! 80mph is a terrible place to start with my A4! I have a Vig 3200 stall converter and 3.23 gears, and that puts me at the very bottom of 3rd gear (1:1 ratio). If I am in D or OD and nail it, it will downshift to 2nd at about 65mph or less and get some momentum going before it shifts into 3rd. I try not to race from a roll at all, but if I have no choice I try to keep them below this speed.

Good kill, but I must say, I have a m6, and I got to do a 40 or so roll on just last week. Its very diffrent, but let me tell you, I put so many cars on this guy. I don't want to say exactly how many seeing I'm not sure exactly, he knew he was beat though. But you won none the less, so congrats!

I thought a high stall converter helps with the dead spots in the ls1 and automatic? I know 40-50mph is a sluggish speed to race, I have noticed the 80mph spot too but thought maybe it was me not getting more on the gas.

Good kill, STi's pull pretty good from high roll. My g/f has one and I've raced her quite a few times. Very awesome cars for what they are.

It does help, but it's still one of my worst spots to start a roll race.
