Can you take the rear shock off with the wheel on?

yes. jack the car up under the rearend and place jackstands on the subframes to free load off of the rear and shocks come off. undoing the nut for the top of the shock (inside car) also helps

exactally what i did, got it down pretty fast too since i have had to yank the springs out a few times, (air bag in my new springs had a small leak i keep trying to fix)
