I used a tape measure. Find a good reference point on the body. Measure both sides. Figure out which way it needs to go. Then adjust, measure, adjust, etc.
I got mine damned near perfect. Just remember to have a full load on the suspension on level ground when you are measuring.

the easiest way is to get a piece of string with some type of weight tied to the end of it (like a thick, heavy washer) and tape it to the highest part of the outside edge of the wheel arch. then get a tape measure and measure from the lip of your rim out to the string and make sure it's even on both sides (or as close to even as possible).

this method may not work the best if the car has been wrecked, tho, so keep that in mind.

and yes, the suspension should definitely be loaded when taking the measurements.

now with a single adjustable rod, (one rod end and one poly end) which end mounts on the rear and which mounts to the body? Or is doesnt matter?

What if the rear isnt centered. any adverse effects on it?

with a single ajustable, it's best to put the poly side on the body mount, and the rod-end on the axle mount

Could you jack the car up from the differential to simulate a load and measure it that way?

I usually jack the car up by the diff whenever I'm working on the back of the car, and every time, level ground or not, the car tends to lean to one side or the other an inch or two. That kind of lean will throw off any sort of plumb bob measuring you try doing. Sit the axle on jack stands though and you should be fine.

Me personally though, I didn't worry about the axle being perfectly centered, just adjusted so that I don't get any more tire rub. Maybe some day I'll take the time to fine tune it.
