Default Car Jackings in Houston, how common?

My dad has a 98 Avalon we bought new, any case he is looking to replace it. He likes Lexus' and wants one for his next car, but I dont want him getting one. Not that their bad cars or we cant afford one, my thing is my dads in his late 60s, lives alone and wont carry a hand gun, hates guns period. For that I rather he not get a car like that because with him being elderly I see it as making him just more of a target for crime. I see old folks drive nice cars all the time, but I always hear of a lot of elderly folks being robbed.

One thing to consider is whether or not your dad hangs out in carjacking areas at carjacking times.

Yes, it can happen to anyone at any time, but it is more likely to occur in certain areas at certain times.

I think about the same thing when looking at vehicles for my other half. Carjackings happen, but I think it is much more likely that a person will be involved in a crash than a carjacking. Obviously, neither is good.

At present, I don't think a Lexus is a carjacker magnet...it's pathetic, but a riced out Civic is more likely to attract a carjacker

But that's only my opinion. Maybe one of the PD guys will pop in with more info on the subject.

I don't think Neil cares about the car being stolen. He doesn't want some thug shooting his dad to get his car.

I don't think a stock looking Lexus is going to be that big of a target. There are plenty of those in your area. If it had 22's the thugs would be all over it.

Car jackings are fairly "common" in Houston, however, most of the incidents I have been called to are "crack rentals".

Heres a link that may help you. Click through different parts of the City that your Father may frequent/reside in and look for "aggravated robbery" since 99% of carjackings involve Force, or threat of. Just remember, that not every agg robb is a car jacking.

If you want a more "detailed" report, call HOD robbery div, or HCSO robbery div (if thats where u live)

Frank

EDIT

I guess I should incl the link

Neil just food for thought when I see an old person behind the wheel, my palms sweat, my muscles tense, and I brace for impact. I would think most people would be more scared of your dad. Example the old man that said **** you bitchs and plowed through the market killing 9 people and injuring 72 people. He did all of it to say don't F wit me bitch I'm old.

Realisticly though I think he will be just fine.

What part of town does your dad hang around? I'm in Sugar Land, and getting carjacked is the least of my worries. Old farts trot around here in their Bentleys all day.

If your dad enjoys hanging out in 5th ward, I think he would be in danger regardless of the car he drives.

I agree it depends a lot on the area. I think not having a gun is a good thing with regard to not raising the level of violence in a situation. In other words if you push over and let a theif have you car they might not feel the need to hurt you. All depends though.
