On this date in 1836...
On this date (March 6th) in 1836, an entire force of 186 brave men, including Davey Crocket, Jim Bowie, and their commander Lieutenant Colonel William Barret Travis, lost their lives after a thirteen day defense of an abandoned Spanish mission in the settlement of San Antonio known as the Alamo. These men could have lived in peace under the Mexican dictator General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna., but they chose instead to fight for liberty. They knew that while peach is desirable, it is worthless without freedom. Eleven days earlier, Colonel Travis sent out the letter written below.
The sacrifice made by these brave men resulted in the battle cry "Remember the Alamo", and gave General Sam Houston time to carry out his strategy, leading to the eventual defeat of Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21st. After his defeat, Santa Anna agreed to surrender all land north and east of the Rio Grande, resulting in the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Texas remained an independent nation until, in 1845, it joined the Union as the 36th state.
Take time today to remember all the brave men and women who have died for our freedom. We owe them more than we can ever repay.

Commandancy of the Alamo

all Americans in the world
Fellow Citizens & Compatriots
I am beseiged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna -- I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -- The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken
-- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism, & every thing dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch -- The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country -
Victory or Death

I bet they are rolling over in their graves with the 'invasion' going on now with the failure to enforce our current immigration laws & the sanctuary status of most Texas cities.

Thanks for the reminder.
We go through our lives as we know it today because of the men and women who stood up for what is right and lost their lives.
Just another reminder of those sacrificing everything and everyone they know in order to serve us.
Thanks.
