After seeing a number of threads recently asking about the user titles, and finding nothing but more uncertainty in plenty of searching, curiosity got the better of me (again! ) and here are the results of what I've worked on periodically starting 29 hours ago...

The analysis included 10,854 members, only going back through all who had at least 10 posts as of 29 hours ago. I looked at a couple dozen pages of the 9-and-under listings, and decided no way was it worth it to go through about 20,000 listings for 0 to 9 posts since almost all of them are one of two titles.

Apparently, the forum first started on November 10, 2001 using UBB Classic 6; switched to UBB Threads on April 25, 2003; and then to VBulletin 3 on October 23, 2003.

Basically everyone registered before October 23, 2003 is in the first group of users, and everyone registered since then is in the second group of users (switching over at approximately UID 15100). This dividing line was the conversion from UBB Threads to VBulletin forum software... It appears that most (if not all) of the users in the first group became 'stuck' with whatever their title was at the time of the UBB/VBB switch, due to some unknown bug in the complex database conversion process.

On December 19, 2004, Brains fixed all of the first-group 'stuck' users' accounts so that they all match up with the current title ranges now.

Breaking this up into several posts to simplify; more to follow...

Toxic Texan on January 14, 2003 posted the title ranges that were used for UBB Classic, but the First Group titles (listed below) replaced these when all of these when UBB Classic was converted to UBB Threads. So they have no current relevance, but are included for completion...

0-24 = Teching In
25-99 = Staging Lane
100-199 = Burnout Box
200-299 = Launching!
300-399 = Grabbing Gears
400-499 = Hitting The Traps
500-999 = TECH Fanatic
1000-1999 = TECH Addict
2000-2999 = TECH Resident
3000 & up = TECH Veteran


And here are the title relations to numbers of posts which I determined:

First Group

0-49 = Teching In (some are stuck here up through the 3000 range)
50-99 = Dialing In (some are stuck here up through the 3000 range)
100-99 = Staging Lane (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
200-299 = Burnout Box (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
300-399 = On The Tree (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
400-499 = Cutting the R/T (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
500-599 = Launching! (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
600-699 = Grabbing Gears (some are stuck here up through the 3000 range)
700-799 = Crossing The Traps (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
800-899 = Timeslip Booth (some are stuck here up through the 2000 range)
900-999 = Tech Resident (speculation since no users currently have this title - guess nobody was in this range at changeover time)
1000-1499 = Tech Addict (some are stuck here up through the 4000 range)
1500-1999 = Tech Fanatic (some are stuck here up through the 11000 range)
2000 & up = Tech Veteran (only one person currently has this title, and is in the 4000 range, so am guessing where it started)

(There are a few odd scattered exceptions in the first group; I'm guessing most or all of these are accounts the administrators were testing 'fix attempts' on.)

Note: See the update below; the First Group accounts have been fixed now.


Second Group

0-49 = Teching In (registered before UID 24155 - June 20, 2004) or
0-49 = Registered User (registered since then... not sure why there's a division at that particular time for this)
50-99 = Staging Lane
100-199 = On The Tree
200-299 = Launching!
300-399 = Grabbing Gears
400-499 = Through The Traps
500-749 = Timeslip Booth
750-999 = TECH Resident
1000-1999 = TECH Fanatic
2000-2999 = TECH Addict (this range could extend up further, or there could be other levels after this; none of the second group who don't have custom titles have gone past this range yet)

(The Second Group ranges were applicable to all members who joined after the October 23, 2003 date, on up through currently.)

Update

On December 19, 2004, Brains repaired the functioning of the first group's title advancement, so everyone is now syncronized with the current titles! He posted that they are the following:

0-49 = Teching In
50-99 = Staging Lane
100-199 = On The Tree
200-299 = Launching!
300-399 = Grabbing Gears
400-499 = Through The Traps
500-749 = Timeslip Booth
750-999 = TECH Resident
1000-1999 = TECH Fanatic
2000-2999 = TECH Addict
3000-3999 = TECH Junkie
4000-4999 = TECH Insomniac
5000-5999 = TECH Veteran

(There do seem to still be issues with the 'Registered User' title for people registered since June 20, 2004 though.)

Aug 2005 - Have noticed some additional changes. Don't know when it happened, but was probably when the trucks site was added last month. Also: Members who are active on performancetrucks.net have a different system of titles.

200-299 = Launching!
300-399 = TECH Apprentice
400-499 = TECH Regular

For anyone who doesn't know what the UIDs mean, it's the member's account number ('User ID'; generally assigned sequentially in the order of registration), and can be used to view their profile by substituting the number into a profile link... for example, for UID 12345, you'd go to https://ls1tech.com/forums/member.php?u=12345

Forum software uses UIDs to make it easier for the database to keep track of who's who.
