Default Painted the ZR1's at Home

Well I finally got done with this little project and was able to take some pics this morning. I originally got the ZR1's off a fellow member, but once I got them home, and cleaned them, I realized how bad of shape they were in.
There was some surface rust, scratches and whoever painted them before did a really bad spray job, leaving black overspray on the inside of a gray rim, not painting inside the lug holes, lazy ***.

So, no one to half *** it, and put shiity looking rims on my ride, I unmounted the tires, sanded down the inside and out with some 400 then 1500 grit, washed them, taped off the lip with 3M 2" Auto Tape, and sprayed them out in my garage via a cupgun hooked to my air compressor. Note, I have NEVER sprayed auto paint before, but, am quite a novice at painting houses so the technique went hand in hand.

The paint was a Sherwin Williams Auto paint, staright black, and was a base and clearcoat in one. Its a quick process, 1st coast, then wait 5 minutes, then the second coat. Thats it, but, I wanted to make sure there was a thick millage build on it, so I did a couple more coats.

Overall, I am very happy with my work. Granted, they are not factory perfect, I did see a couple pinholes once all said and done, but shoot, not noticeable from afar.

I inquired about powdercoating but the cost to strip and recoat was gonna run over $200, when all said and done, the paint supplies were just over $50 plus it makes it worth even more in pride looking at the good job I had done.

The ZR1's are 17x9,17x11 and the tires arer the new Nitto NT05's.

Feel free to comment, thanks guys

Great job - I really like the fact the you painted the barrels...that would make cleaning it so much more simple. I might steal the idea!

How do you like the NT05's?

Thanks bro, so far the NT05's feel tighter and better in the corners, I'm still wearing off the fresh rubber so once the get broken in a little more, then I am sure they will bite even harder. I has the 555's before and and I really am pleased with Nitto and their quality tires.
