Fierce 1983 Olds Cutlass Racer Makes Our Day: Track Time Tuesday Presented by Yokohama Tire’s ADVAN APEX
It may not be the prettiest car on the track but this classic Olds with a turbo 5.3-liter LS hands out savage whoopings.
We recently came across a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that we love–okay, we might even be a little obsessed. The classic Olds Cutlass is a terror on the track, and a cool sleeper on the drag strip. To most, this wolf in sheep’s clothing may not strike fear at first glance. But when this Olds with a 5.8-liter LS hammers down, it leaves many a competitor in the rearview mirror.
Drag Racing & Car Stuff caught the vintage Cutlass Supreme in action. And they chatted with owner and driver Eric Foght about his savage sedan. Plus, we get a taste of the Cutlass Supreme laying it down on the track. It is loud, nasty, and yes–awesome.
Thanks to General Motors G-Body platform, Oldsmobiles are well suited for a track-focused build. And with the right modifications, they can generate some high-performance specs. Without a doubt, Foght’s Oldsmobile proves how smart upgrades can make a special race car.
First off, we learn that the odometer is at about 220,000. Pretty amazing shape, and very amazing to see and hear. But with years and miles on it, it needed some oomph.
Powered by a stock 5.3-liter LS boosted with a 75mm turbo, Foght says he got the engine from a buddy’s old pickup. Paired to a TH 350, the Cutlass still retains many stock parts, new valve springs, and a Gen IV intake. And, if you look carefully, a well placed Bud Light can!
It all comes together and works incredibly well. He lays down solid 9-second passes with incredible launch. On the quarter-mile the Olds consistently takes down a number of muscle cars, pony cars, racers.
Not only do we love the old school style, but how skillfully the racer fuses two great GM feats: the 5.3-liter LS V8 and the G-body platform.
Enjoy watching and listening to this Olds Cutlass Supreme in action. Check it out!
