Pair of Corvettes Show a Tesla Their Taillights on Dragstrip

Tesla vs Corvette dragstrip

We know that EVs like the Tesla are quick off the line, but these Corvettes still dominate the dragstrip.

EVs have an inherit advantage at the dragstrip. They make instant torque and just rocket off the line with all the sound and fury of a rented golf cart. But they are quick golf carts for sure. There are countless videos out there showing a Tesla destroying all sorts of sports cars on the dragstrip. But the C8 Corvette packing an LT2 V8 is no slouch in the quarter mile either. And it is about time that the old school internal combustion engine showed the upstart EVs that they are not going down without a fight.

We see just how much fight the Corvette has thanks to a video that was recently posted to the Wheels YouTube channel. In this video we see a 2015 Tesla Model S take on a pair of C8 Corvettes. Not to give away any spoilers but ICE = 2 EV = 0. Of course, at the dragstrip anything can happen, and the Tesla driver doesn’t seem to be the most experienced driver. Perhaps he is used to driving in Autopilot mode. In any case this is how the battle went down.

Race 1

drag race

The Tesla is up against a C8 Corvette Stingray that appears to be equipped with the Z51 package. As you would expect, the Tesla takes the jump off the line and builds about a car length lead. But the Corvette slowly recovers the lost ground and begins to pull in the Tesla. By the time they reach the quarter mile the Corvette trapped at 116.04 mph and the Tesla at 108.77. The Corvette ran an 11.72 compared to the Tesla at 11.87. V8 power for the win.

Race 2

Tesla losing

This race features a different 2020 C8 Corvette against the 2015 Tesla Model S. This one is difficult to take anything meaningful away from to be honest. The Corvette is damn near the eighth mile mark before the Tesla driver remembers that the car doesn’t drive itself and decides to push the accelerator. The Corvette destroys the Tesla. Amazingly the Corvette runs an identical 11.72 but traps a bit higher at 119.49. That same Corvette runs again against a Trans Am in a third race and puts down an 11.80 at 118.67.

On this day the Corvette could not be beaten. It shows that while EVs are quick that they are not unbeatable. Although to be fair there are more powerful Tesla models available today. And surely there are better drivers. We still can’t figure out what that driver was doing in the second race. But more than that we see how quick and consistent the C8 is. Magazines have claimed the C8 can run low 11 second quarter mile times. And we are sure that is possible. We have seen it. But on this day is wasn’t happening. But they were still fast enough to put the Tesla back on the trailer.
