C8 Corvette Stolen From Dealer Lot With Key Fob

Thieves made off with a C8 Corvette in the most casual manner possible, highlighting a common problem with certain modern vehicles.

Automotive theft in the U.S. has been on the rise for several years now, and there’s seemingly no end in sight to this alarming trend. In the old days, thieves had to at least be somewhat skilled in using tools and knowing how to hot wire cars if they wanted to make off with one, but the rise of technology in modern vehicles has made this task much easier – and quicker, if you know what you’re doing. That much is on clear display in this video recently posted to Instagram, in which we see footage of a thief who managed to hop right in a C8 Corvette and drive it off a dealer lot in mere seconds.

When the video kicks off, we see two people walking down the sidewalk in front of the dealer lot, clearly with a purpose in mind. That purpose quickly comes to light as one of those people waltzes up to the driver side door of the C8 Corvette that’s parked right in the front row, uses a key fob to unlock it, and hops inside, while the other person gets in the passenger seat. From there, we see the two thieves back up and drive off in the C8 Corvette, right in the middle of the day, unbeknownst to anyone – at least, until the dealer discovered that it was gone.

As for how this happened, well, there’s no definitive answer provided here, though there are at least two possibilities. For starters, the thief may have broken into the dealership prior to this incident and stolen the key to the C8 Corvette, which we’ve seen happen on several occasions in the past. If that’s the case, it’s unclear why the dealer would have left the car sitting on the lot, though perhaps they weren’t aware the key was stolen in the first place – until it was too late.

Alternatively, it’s possible that the thief cloned the key fob for the C8 Corvette and then used it to gain access and drive off. There are several ways this can be done, as certain companies offer this service online or via kiosks, or thieves can simply use an RFID copier to do so on the fly, among other remote methods. Unfortunately, that means that in mere minutes, thieves can clone a key fob and easily – and quietly – make off with any number of modern vehicles, which means that we as owners have to be a bit more diligent than ever before – especially if you own a desirable vehicle like the C8 Corvette.
