Camaro vs. Camaro in No Prep Grudge Match Drag Race
F-Body Camaro throws down and takes the win in gnarly no prep race.
We here at LS1tech love us some no-prep drag racing. Without a prepped surface, it’s all about who can make the most of their very limited traction. It also usually results in some very nutty ‘street’ cars getting loose, and having to be reined in by their pilots.
So, when famed grudge match racer Tony V makes an appearance, we take notice. Tony V, actually Anthony Mangiaracina, is something of a celebrity when it comes to hurting feelings at the strip. His fourth-gen F-Body Camaro, at least, when we last saw it, uses a carb’d all-motor setup paired to a built Powerglide. The combination doesn’t sound too wild, on paper, but Tony V, as he is known, makes the most of it.
That said, it didn’t stop this challenger, staged to the right of Mangiaracina in a classic Camaro, from trying.
Both cars start out with a burnout, surrounded on all sides by a large crowd. Pro tip: Standing behind a drag car in the almost-a-burnout-box staging area is a good way to lose an eye. They’re cleaning off the tires, and that much wheel speed means any grit on those rear tires instantly becomes a projectile. Stand clear, everyone!

Also stand clear because Tony V can barely see through his smoke show. After a bit of back and forth, the air clears and both cars roll up to the tree.
As soon as the tree goes green, things go South for Tony V’s opponent. The classic Camaro gets squirrelly off the line, and while both cars are picking up the front wheels through the 1/8th mark, it’s the newer fourth-gen Camaro, piloted by Tony V, that keeps things going straight.
Want to know more about the Tony V. Camaro? Us, too. Fortunately, our friends at DragZine got as much of an interview out of the man himself as a grudge racer will give. Check it out here.
