Pikes Peak, the longest consecutive running hill climb in North America and one of the bucket list events to hit in a driver’s career. Now that the entire climb is paved, more cars are coming out to tackle the hair raising and challenging trek to the top of the mountain. A lot of the drivers who want to enter also compete in Formula Drift and one of those guys is Danny George. He’s also going to do it in his LS3 powered NB-Chassis Mazda Miata.

It’s not just that he’s going to be doing Pikes Peak, either. Danny will also be coming straight from Formula Drift New Jersey and the cheese grater of a track, Wall Speedway. I call it a cheese grater because of the track wall design and how FD runs the track. The walls of Wall Speedway uses a steel Armco barrier and the joints are stacked together to not impact the flow of the stock cars that drive the wall counter-clockwise. However, instead of following into that counter-clockwise path as the oval cars do FD runs the bank clockwise. You might start to see where the danger lies in running the wall of Wall Speedway. Bump into the wall with the wrong part of your car and it will rip parts off, suck you into the Armco, and completely destroy your car.

So that is the first disadvantage. The other is that Danny will have to travel from New Jersey to Pikes Peak in his rig for about 3 days, if the car survives the speedway. Danny has good history with the Wall as it was his first ever career Top 16 in Formula Drift. So, he should make it to Pikes in one piece. The next disadvantage? He’s never really done any road racing as his entire career as a driver has been in Formula Drift. That’s not to say he doesn’t have the skill to tackle the mountain. It’s quite the opposite and he may have a slight advantage as he’ll have the skill set to handle ever changing track conditions with dust, rocks, and tire debris are all things he has to deal with while drifting already. He’s just going to have to apply less oversteer.

Pikes Peak will be a great event for Danny to tackle as it will help prove that not only does he have the skills to drive the mountain, but could also help him further his career as a driver. He can show that he can be put into any situation and drive a car in it. He’s also got the fan base that any sponsor would love to have and much of his funding comes from them directly through package sales of t-shirts and decals to Kickstarter campaigns. Formula Drift calls Danny the people’s champion and his fans prove it time and again.

We wish Danny George and his LS3 Miata luck at Pikes Peak and Wall Speedway. It’s going to be a wild ride, that’s for sure.
