Hurst Olds Pro Mod Shoots Rooster-Tails at Sand Drags
What do you do with a retired Pro Mod? You slap some big paddle tires on it and rip up the sand-strip, of course.
Pro Mod racers frequently convert their cars to run eighth-mile or quarter-mile, but this conversion is a new one. After Skinny Kid Race Cars built a new Hurst Oldsmobile Pro Mod, the old one headed to race on a different surface: sand.
For a car never at all designed to race off pavement, the Hurst digs into the sand reasonably well, although it gets sideways, just a bit, especially in the shutdown area. However, the Pro Mod gets off the line reasonably well for something that can cover an eighth-mile in under four seconds.

The idea came from Rich Simon of Richard’s Auto Parts. They sponsored the Brian Robbins-driven car in Pro Mod competition for years before Rich took over ownership. And since Rich has enjoyed off-roading for years, why not see what would happen on sand? If it’s not the fastest dirt-drag car in the world, we can at least admire the 30-foot rooster tails it generates. DuneTV was on hand to watch its first test passes off the asphalt.

At the moment, the Hurst Olds runs a Big Block Chevy V8 with a massive 14-71 supercharger on it. It has run Oldsmobile and Chrysler Hemi power in the past.
And if the paint looks familiar, you might have seen two-time Hot Rod Drag Week winner Tom Bailey racing its replacement in 2017. Skinny Kid Race Cars built Bailey’s Sick Seconds 2.0 ‘69 Camaro, which was styled like a Pro Mod and won Drag Week 2015.
Bailey made a fantastic save in the new Hurst car early in the year before escaping from a fireball in it. That came just days after nuking Sick Seconds 2.0’s engine at Drag Week 2017; it was a rough week for Bailey. We hope to see both Hurst Olds Pro Mods dominating their respective racing surfaces again soon.
