Engine Porn: Katech Performance 700 Horsepower LT1 Grand Sport Corvette

The LT1 is an amazing motor out of the box. Offering 455 horsepower and 460 ft-lbs of torque in the C7 Corvette Stingray. This LT1 is the first of the generation V of the LS motors. All Gen V engines are aluminum blocks with aluminum cylinder heads. They include features such as direct-fuel injection, piston cooling jets, active fuel management, variable displacement oil pump, continuously variable valve timing and aluminum cylinder heads and block. It is a very advanced engine, so how can you get more power from it? Many aftermarket companies make bolt-on superchargers for it, but what if you want to keep it naturally aspirated?

You bore it out of course. Just like in the old hot rod days, punching out a block to a larger displacement will help you gain more power. The LT1 is 6.2 liters or 376 cubic inches so, what does it take to push it out to 427ci? The short answer is, a lot of work. In this video, Katech Performance shows the process from start to finish of building their Street Attack 427ci LT1. Starting with dropping the motor out of the C7 Grand Sport. The motor is taken apart and the block is bored out. They then use liquid nitrogen to shrink the cylinder sleeves to fit them into the block. Then use and oven to expand them back into place in the block. The entire rotating assembly is forged, including the crank, rods, and pistons. Seeing a awesome motor like this come together is literally the birth of 700 horsepower. The end result is a C7 Corvette Grand Sport that will eat a Z06 for breakfast on the track.
