Aside from one repaint and a little rust, ’72 Firebird same as it was when new, 350 V8 backed by rare column-shift automatic option.

When it comes to classics, you’ve got quite a few choices. The early Seventies Pontiac Firebird is among them. After all, you could get one with a 455 Super-Duty V8 to go with its part-Italian sports car, part-muscle machine looks. Of course, other V8s were available, though they could easily be replaced with the right LS or LT.

Unless it’s all original, though. Then, you must decide if you’re going to make the swap, or keep it as-is. Autoevolution found such an example on eBay recently, in the form of a ’72 Firebird that’s nearly as original as it was back in the day.

“This car is a joy to drive,” the seller writes. “Wouldn’t hesitate to take it anywhere. It currently is in need of nothing to be enjoyed. Has light rust in rear quarters, rest of the car and underside are rock solid. This car received one repaint many years ago. Other than that it is original.”

Under the long hood is a 350 V8 with an automatic to send all 160 net ponies to the rear. However, that auto isn’t shifted from the floor. Instead, the seller says it boasts a rare column-shift option to guide the ponies to the right gears. As Autoevolution notes, the V8’s logged over 51,000 miles over the past 50 years.

Speaking of being almost original, though, the Firebird not only is as-described, it also has its original documentation, including the warranty policy. And of course, it still has its prized Protect-O-Plate, ready to confirm the originality of this super green ‘Bird.

Other features include power steering and braking, plus air conditioning to keep cool while the Firebird burns up the road. The seller says they’ve owned it for a couple of years, and uses it as a daily driver.

As the seller notes, it’s “very hard to come by the 70-73 cars this solid/original.” Especially one daily driven like this green Firebird. Whomever winds up with it next will have quite the machine to drive around town.
