New Camaro Will Definitely be Lighter

Today’s cars suffer from one major problem. Bloat. Cars today are super heavy and with good reason. Increased safety standards have meant that cars now need 11 airbags, high strength steels, and other heavy materials to better protect the cabin and its occupants.

However, with that weight comes lower fuel economy, and worse performance. Only by using more expensive materials like aluminum and carbon fiber would allow auto makers the chance to lower the vehicles weight. And that’s exactly what GM did with the next generation Camaro.

Using the Cadillac Alpha Platform, the same that underpins both the ATS and CTS, Chevy’s engineers were able to shed a full 200 lbs off the last generation Camaro. All the while, the designers making the new Camaro smaller and more maneuverable as well. According to Chevy, while the gross weight of the car is still a secret, the new Camaro has shed, “at least” 200 lbs. But how was that done.

Chevy states that the new Camaro has switched to a fully aluminum suspension that’s over 20% lighter than the outgoing unit. Also, aluminum cross bars and beams are used throughout the rest of the cars architecture. While 200 lbs might not sound like that much, it’s definitely a step in the right direction and will assuredly make the new Camaro a worthy opponent of the new Mustang.

Now, if Chevy would just announce that a second generation of Z/28 were coming, all would be right in the world.
