Volvorado: A 700 Horsepower Turbo LS Volvo Station Wagon

Turbo LS Volvo Station Wagon

Unassuming turbo LS Volvo 240, called the Volvorado, is a drag machine in innocent-looking clothing.

Just over a year ago, I brought you the story of the twin-turbocharged 5.3-liter LS-powered Volvo 240 sedan that put over 600 wheel horsepower down on its “break-in” tune. Now, I’d like you to meet the Volvorado, the car that sedan took a lot of influence from. While that sedan was a gutted and dedicated racing machine, this car is a bit more refined when it comes to the interior. Under the hood, though, it’s a bit wilder. Best of all: It could be yours!

This magnificent beast was for sale on Bring A Trailer. At the time of writing, the auction the current high bid was sitting at just $8,000. That is a lot of performance for the price! But six days is a lot of time, so it’s likely to keep going pretty rapidly. At any rate, let’s dig into the Volvorado.

Single Turbo Satisfaction

The Volvorado uses a 6.0-liter V8, like one might find in a Chevrolet Silverado. You see where the name came from now, right? Let’s dig a bit more into what’s under the Dale Earnhart livery-wrapped hood.

The 6.0 has a couple of modifications to it here. First, it’s got a Jarrett Faggart Racing ground camshaft from ISKY Racing Cams, a Holley Terminator X engine management system, two Walbro 450 LPH E85 fuel pumps, and Bosch 210-pound injectors. Oh yeah, and a VSRacing 7875 turbo making all of that fuel support necessary. This beastly engine feeds power to a 4L80E with a TransGo shift kit and a Circle D Specialties converter that transfers it to the rear wheels via a Ford 8.8 rear end. Finally, a carbon fiber clutch pack, Mickey Thompson slicks, and an adjustable rear traction bar ensure you’re not just lighting the tires up; you’re actually putting that power down.

It’s not lacking in power, either. This monster made 701 wheel horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque on the dyno.

Still Complete Enough for Cruising

The seller of this Volvo was a frequent watcher of my personal YouTube channel back in the days of more regular posting. So, I’ve been seeing this car for a handful of years now. While many vehicles like this sit in the garage and only come out for special occasions, the seller isn’t afraid to drive it to do daily tasks, cruise on the highway, etc. It really can be the ultimate daily, so long as you don’t mind it not having air conditioning.

Otherwise, the interior is complete. This even includes the iconic Volvo station wagon rear-facing jump seats. Anyone you put back there is definitely going to need the seat belts to stay planted, though!

Aside from the speedometer and odometer not working and some basic wear and staining, the interior is complete and ready to head to the grocery store, the kid’s soccer practice, or whatever you may see fit!
