Default wanting to hit 12s

i just bought a 2000 trans am ls1 m6 (not a ws6,but does have ram air hood if that makes a difference.) and i was wondering what it would take to get the car to run 12.80's. i was thinking headers full exhaust and slp cold air

Spend some serious money and get you a 12 bolt rear end.

Well the 10 bolts have a reputation for being some of the weakest factory rear ends out of detriot. Its about 7.5 inches wide so its very small and in the rear end world wider is better. They also have to handle 300 hp and 300 lbs of torque straight from the factory which is alot for a 7.5 inch wide rear to handle. Best idea is to get a 12 bolt or 9". I'll be doing this shortly because I know my 10 bolt will probably break if I try to track it again after 35 + abusive track passes!

but if i am only going to run street tires and the only mods i have planned and headers ory, slp cold air, and a ls6 intake do i really need to spend the 2500 on a 12 bolt or a 9 in? i figured with street tire it would spin before it snaped. and even if i take it to the track i will not be lauching at more than 2000 ever i have a friend with a blazer with a ten bolt and a heavily moded lt1 in it and he has drop his from 5000 rpm a number of times. i am just trying to see if the money is neccessary to spend.

I'd just go with a good summer tire if high 12s are your goal.

If you are on a budget: Lid, cutout, sticky tires, minor weight reduction and excellent driving may get you there, if your car is a strong runner.

If you are running street tires you have no problem and probably wont break your rear. But good luck hitting 12s with street tires. You have more of a chance using street drag such as Nitto 555rs stock hitting 12s, then having full intake and exhuast, using street tires.

its going to take some mods to run a 12.80 if you dont plan on getting a good 60' out of the car. it takes a lot more power to go fast on the big end than it does on the little end.

i got M/T et street drag radials (they hook up more than a $2 ***** in Vegas), SLP intake, smooth tube, and a NX 150 shot on a 2002 WS6 M6. my rear end hasn't broke. yet. the stock clutch is pretty weak and i smell it when the 150 shot hits. so, what i'm getting at is the clutch in my car slips before the rear ends breaks. granted, a new rear end is on my 'to get list' but if mine holds up with my mods, you shouldn't be worried throwing drag radials and a full exhaust at it.

I just put a set of Nitto Dr's on mine. Was runnin Kuhmo Z rated Street tires but I just can't seem to put those brand new (kuhmos) tires back on since I put those Nitto's on, LOL. I dont believe that you will crap out your rear with a few good Launches over 1500 RPM's, but I would not overdo it, which means hot lappin at high RPM launches at track is a definate no no. Should not tempt fate. Just ran a 12.72 a couple of weeks ago with the mods in sig and a 1600 launch with stock rear end and gears.

If you want ***** to the wall then change out your rear end so you will have no worries!
