Default Morel Lifter Question

I know lifter preload is posted all over the forum, but i couldnt find anyone specifically post what the preload for a Morel Lifter should be. If anyone knows could they please post up. Thanks

I use .010"-.020" exhaust and .010"-.030" intake. John Callie (the developer of that lifter) doesn't like to use actual measurments he suggested I use the following rules of thumb:

Iron block and heads 1/2 turn on the adjuster
Iron block/aluminum heads 1/2-3/4 turn
Aluminum block and heads 3/4-1 turn

Thanks for responding. so an adjustable rocker is needed for use with a morel lifter?

No, the preload is set with longer/shorter pushrods; you will have to measure so you can order the right length pushrods.

i understand that, but he mentioned a 1/2-3/4 turn on the adjuster so didnt know if adjustable rockers are recommended over selective push rods when using these lifters. thanks

My bad, I see what you are saying. For getting a very nice swipe in the middle of a valve, adjustables will work better than stock with the Morel's. However stock works just fine; mine are Harland Sharp stock modified rockers, Morel lifters. I used .030 on all 16 valves. Ended up with a 7.325 pushrod, AFR heads milled to .018 (.063) and GM .051 head gaskets.

I got the same reply from John last year however Morel told me 0.030" - 0.050" preload. I am running 0.050" now and it works well and they are quiet. I ran these numbers by John Callie and he agreed with them and told me my setup is fine.

Agreed. I've run up to .050" before as well. I normally try and stay on the shallow side but have had no problems at all with any preload setting on these. They are second to none for a hydraulic lifter.

I think the number of turns quoted for aluminum/aluminum comes out in that neighborhood anyhow.

I hate to bump up an old thread, but I just purchased the Morel "street" Linked Lifters. These are their budget lifter. 72332. I set preload to 1 turn or about .040-.050. I have YT rockers on top of them, but my valvetrain is still pretty noisy. I'm getting the sewing machine sound. Didn't have this before and all I switched was the rockers and Lifters.

I noticed when I set the preload that even at .050 preload that there was still a ton of plunger depth left. Felt more like stock lifters. I guess my question is, on these budget Street lifters, is the suggest preload still the same as their racing stuff? Or should I have more preload like what stuggested for stock lifters?

I just ordered a set of these for my iron block 370. Ed Curtis told me to run .020" preload. If I had an aluminum block he said .030".

Some like to run then with less preload. With my current 0.050" they sound and run like stock. You can run a little less with the iron block.
