Default Drill/Tap oil pan- any hints?

Hello. Is the oil pan of the LS1 tricky to drill/tap? I've read that it is powdered metal and I wondering if this poses a problem. Any special techniques needed?

Thanks
Ben

when I drilled mine, I coated the bit in grease to help keep some of the shavings out of the pan. I also had to grind a little on the k-member in order to get far enough back to be able to drill a hole, I'm not sure if anybody else has had that problem. And be sure and not to be pushing to hard when the bit finally goes through the pan, the rotating assembly isn't to far away. Maybe some of the other guys have some more advice.

Pull the pan and tap it off the car. a small peice of trash can destroy the bearings.

Take the pan off! A little work now or a lot of EXPENSIVE work later!

I drilled mine on the car. Just be really patient. Dip the drill bit into a tub of grease, drill for a few seconds, then wipe the bit off. Get a 1/2 inch drill and run it REALLY slow. If you take your time it is very easy to drill it without getting anything in the pan. Mine took about twenty minutes. Much quicker than pulling the pan, though.

Well I will say this I drilled mine off the car but while I didn't use grease for obvious reasons. I didn't end up with much on the pan side I will say that it would be a bunch safer to take it off but the grease thing does work but I am sure you won't keep every bit out and what does go in the pan more than like likely the filter will get it if it gets past the pick up screen. It is your choice good luck.

i took a 1/2" peice of aluminum and tig welded it to the pan then drilled and tapped the both of them together, off the truck. worked out great. i didnt think the side of the pan was strong enough to tap.

just don't do it near the crease on the pass side towards the front... a little pick up tube resides just behind it.... imagine how I found that out...

Glad to hear it I still want to look at your kit. I am planning on heading out to HWY6 Saturday. Do you think you will be anywhere in the neighborhood?
