Can a 700R4 handle 6700 rpm ?
I was talking to a buddy and he says that a 700 R4 cannot handle the extra rpms of an LS6. He said GM claims the 700 can handle 6100-6200 rpm reliably. Any one have a 700 R4 ( even with an LS1 with heads/ cam that can pull those rpms) that spins high. My 700 is built but it's already wasted 3rd & 4th- however 1st & 2nd are still good . Gonna take it apart and see what's up. Maybe a bad core(internal leak or worse crushed planetary gears
). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say shifting from 3rd to 4th at that high of an rpm on a 700r4 could be disastrous as those are the weaker gears. However 1st to 2nd and possible 2nd to 3rd should be able to handle those higher rpms. As far as outright rpms (as in a top speed run at 6700 rpms in 3rd which is 1:1 i don't see why it couldn't handle it.

The C6 A6 doesn't share any parts with a 4L60E, it's a completely different animal but the truck version should be very interesting for us "conversion" types. I am waiting for my first chance to check one out for my hot rod......not that my 4L60E isn't ok, I just think a six speed auto would be very cool and efficient. Another note...the A6 has no bands and servos, it has five clutches and two planetary sets, that's why they are so awesome to run up through the gears......no torque drop-off between gears, really seamless, very much like an Allison in a truck.

Now I could be wrong but my understanding is that a 4L65e is just a 4L60e with upgraded internals. I bet if you contact one of the sponsors who rebuilds transmissions they could let you know for sure.

The C6 has used two different auto transmissions. The first year they were using the 4L65E. '06 and later model years use the 6L80E, a new modular design 6 speed that will also be used in the light trucks (currently only available in the new Tahoe & Suburban).

If the question is can a 700r4 handle the higher RPM's.. ?
The answer is YES, if CORRECTLY built with High Performance and HD parts (Gears, Clutch, valves, etc) to handle the RPM and power range that you intend to run.

My 700r4 handles wot shifts routinely up to 7000 rpm ........its in my '68 first gen z-28 small block with 4.11 rear. It is a TCI race version with their lockup converter and it freakin hammers when it shifts!! I have beat the **** out of it and had no problems. Not sure of all the upgrades TCI does to their trans, but it rocks.!! Hope the 4L60E in my 57 LS1 conversion does well too!!
