My mechanic bought these for my cam install. Go to ls1howto.com under cam install. They show u how to do it. Tools are marked L for left and R for right. They work great and dont have to worry about lifters falling.

Yeah what is the size on those metal dowels? That would be quite a difference in price compared to the ones from Thunder.

i did three cam installs using wooden dowels. i have still had lifters that weren't "locked in" and i had to worry about. i bought the right tool and it locks them in and its worry free.

Here's a picture that I took a while back to help illustrate what the JPR tool does versus the rod. I bought a half inch diameter aluminum rod and cut it in two planes (similar to the JRP Tool). I made a pair of these and they seem to work just fine. I chose the dimensions so that the valve lifter would be held up in place as much as possible but still have enough clearance to insert the rods and not get stuck. The overall thickness is about 5/16" against the lifter, but compared to a 5/16" rod, the lifter is held about an eighth of an inch farther away from the cam. This is where the JPR Tool probably does a better job than the rod. I've also used the 16 pen magnet trick and that works fairly well too, but it's a pain to clamp all of the magnets in place and they are fairly expensive too.

I plan to retake this photo sometime, because I'm not pleased with the lighting and angle/perspective of the camera.

Steve

Why would anyone take the chance of using wood? There is a good chance of dirt or wood particles will get in the engine.
