Default affects of short block sitting around

Say I orderd a freshly put together short block, but Its not installed for a while. How long can it sit around before things start to go wrong? How can you protect it from sitting around long term?

I spray mine every month with WD-40 to keep surface rust from forming. I also rotate the crank a few times to make sure the cyl walls get coated.

Use Caution in what type of oil you use.... The cylinder walls and rings might get pissed....

Is WD-40 good or bad? What oils should not be used?
Off topic but CTS are you a mechanic? I am a mechanic, and my wife and I are looking to move to the Charlotte area. I am wondering what a good mechanics salary is down there. Shoot me a PM if you have time.

Don't use wd40! It's half solvent. If you want proof spray the **** out of a wrench and and leave it on your work bench for two days... It'll be dry.

Marine fogging oil. Good stuff, puts a nice film of oil on cylinder walls that hangs out a long time. Spray it, rotate to coat cylinder walls, spray again and cover up. Good for quite a while. Probably not a bad idea to hit lifter bores etc as well.

I meant the work bench test. There's better ways to protect a block.
