A friend of mine has a stock 96 trans am, lost his keys, had one made up without the black insert in the key. Car will turn over but will not start. He said it was running with the new key but ?. My question is; Without the vat, will the car turn over or not? I thought that without the specific key the car would not even turn over. thanks

VATS is split into two parts; the crank enable thru the BCM, and the injector enable thru the PCM.

If the system is working properly the car shouldn't crank or start with an incorrect key pellet.

The car can be modified on either part or both to get around VATS. If the BCM side was modified (starter relay disconnected from VATS) then car would crank, but not start.
