It's a side-effect of how flow is measured, steady-state flow at set lift and set vacuum. I have never once seen or heard of a case where someone actually added lift to their cam and lost engine performance, there is good reason that Pro Stock or Top Fuel engines have over an inch of lift.
Flow past the valve is the biggest restriction in just about every 2 valve V8. More lift is better, but there WILL be diminishing returns, especially in engines of lower RPM you will find a point where the flow past the valve is no longer your biggest limiting factor.
