Possible to create variable runner length/diameter based on rpm?

However, when did sportbikes all have fuel injection? Even in the late 90s the Yamahas were still carb'd. It isn't that they are behind because of lack of innovation, they are just behind because it isn't practical. It's odd, in some aspects they are far more advanced than any car has been (Cylinder head design for example), but in other areas they are still far behind (Variable cam phasing, variable/staged runner lengths, etc).
